How confident are you with your car after 100,000 miles?

I broke 100,000 miles a little bit ago (at 105000 now). My car seems to be fine so far. Considering it only broke down on me once but I was able to get it working and not needed to tow it. I've had my car for 8 years or so starting at 12,000 miles and do not regret it. It's a 2002 Dodge Neon :-D

I think I will make it to 160,000+ before I will get ride of it.

100k doesn't scare me.... 200k and I might have some reservations depending on the car and my history with it.

I have one vehicle that I drive with 130k on it. I have no worries about driving it anywhere/anytime

I'd be nervous about driving and paying for a car with that many miles. I'd trade mine in a bit before it cleared the 100k mile extended warranty.

Our 2 daily drivers are 14 years old, one with 125k on it and one with 140k on it. We don't hesitate to take them on long road trips. As long as you pay attention to the car and keep up on the maintenance most cars will be reliable far past 100k.

Edit:
Just noticed you have a neon. FYI, my brother's neon had an engine bay fire. Hopefully yours does a bit better...

Almost 200k on my daily, pretty confident, hasn't let me down yet. Will need to change clutch assembly soon though.

117k on my Forester XT, making way more power than it's supposed to. I'd drive it to CA without worrying about it (well, after I fix what I think may be the passenger front wheel bearing... :hmm:). :p

My MR2 has 254k on it (about 70k on the engine) and I'm taking a ~4200mi road trip in September. I'm pretty confident, considering I'm doing it...but I am going to bring a lot of tools just in case.

My current car (VW) has, in a way, been nothing but trouble, however none of those issues stop/ped the car from being driven. It's at about 92000 miles at the moment. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it because of that, and I'm feeling a bit of trepidation about the 100k mark. My previous VW had to be put down because of a cylinder head gasket issue shortly before the 100k mark. I think it's a time for greater vigilance and more checking of the simple things that the layman can check.

Depends on the car and service history. My toyota @ 115? Not too worried, replace or serviced everything that could have gone wrong save for something catastrophic. I don't drive in fear of anything breaking and if it does, some chewing gum and string will probably mend it.

If my car was german however, and used for the first 65k like mine was (anyone remember that girl who went 20k without an oil change in a Merc?), then I might be worried. Slight vibration in the car and my wallet will melt.

Came in here to post my VW.

I would drive my 2002 Passat with ~139k miles from here to California and back. It has never once left me on the side of the road or refused to start up. Any of its issues have been unrelated to the cars everyday reliability. I also feel that mechanically it is actually strong. I know its maintenance is up to date in all areas so I trust that as well.

Or a Chevy Cobalt. ^_^

It depends on a variety of factors. Climate can kill the body pretty quickly, especially here where they use a lot of road salt. However, any car should last a very long time if kept up, parts are still available, and rust control is used. I've heard plenty of stories of maxed out odometers and the vehicle is still going.

I've only had one car with less than 100k miles on it and it had 94k. My two current cars have 150+k miles on them. I have no idea when the timing belt was changed on my miata and that worries me a bit. My 89 dodge caravan's drivetrain is fine but everything else is shot. The metal wire that holds the spare tire on snapped yesterday and the tire fell off while I was driving lol. Luckily nobody was behind me when it happened. Trying to replace the van probably with a saab or volvo that will have 100+ miles on it.

150k is the new 100k, for cars that are maintained. Even then many can do 200k before large and major repairs are needed now.

I had about 165k on my old truck, my buick was a little over 200k (trans went), firebird was around 200k, etc...

My wife does not like to keep cars past 60k. My current truck has 95k but she does not care about the truck. Our Mercedes has 43k and I bet she will keep it to about 60k and get something else.

My car hits that marker in about 30k, so its got a few more years of life left :p. Nah, I feel confident it's going to get there and keep on chugging. After that the question sort of becomes on how much longer the clutch and turbo last me.

Both of my parents vehicles are over 100k and work pretty much like they did when they were new. Dad's CRV has some odd issues here and there but nothing that mechanically problematic.

At that mileage, do a full tune up. New plugs, wires, filters (air and gas), maybe flush and refill the coolant system. Check all belts for wear. Check your steering and suspension for wear or looseness.
Maybe change the tranny oil and filter. Your alternator and starter may decide to fail in the next 50K or so. The brushes will eventually wear out and then no charge or no start happens.

I figure as long as I dont keep hammering on the stock trans in my Duramax which has 126K miles now it should last to around 300-400K miles...?

It does have an aftermarket triple disk converter which replaced the weakest link in the Allison trans but 5th gear just wont hold in stock form with 400hp and 700+ TQ... New trans=$3500+ have other priorities for now...

Every car we've had since 1990 has been taken for more than 200,000 by us. I do all the maintenance my self for the most part. I have had them "on the hook" 2 times in 700,000 miles combined. I don't consider that a bad reliability record.

90K on my Legacy GT
200k on my 240SX
140k on my 300ZX TT

To be honest, I wouldn't have any reservations about doing cross country trips in any of them. With proper maintenance MOST large failures are quite predictable and can be taken care before they cause any issues. Beyond that, random failures are just that and can happen to anyone.

143k on my Suburban. Drive it a lot, daily. When we go out of town, we take it.

I guess if it breaks down, it breaks down. It's a 2004, our other choice is the 99 Tahoe with over 150k.

Most modern cars should be fine at this mileage. I got rid of my last one right at this mark because of some rust that was creeping in and a few systems that were not easily repaired (ac, brakes). I had had enough of dicking around with it, so I pay more now for its replacement, a new car that costs me more per month but costs me 0 seconds/month in worrying about any repair costs or time spent on the side of the road nursing a semi-broken water pump. I never have been stranded, though, and put many miles on used cars.

Remember, though, if you drove the first 100k without a problem chances are very slim that a road trip even of 2-3k miles is going to leave you on the side of the road.

142,000 on my Volvo and 169,000 on the 951 and I don't worry about either of them. As long as you take care of your things, you'll be fine.

My last GM 1500 pickup went 280,000 miles on the OEM drivetrain, so buying a replacement GM with only 100,000 miles seemed like an OK deal. I would hop in and drive it across the country right now with somewhere around 130,000 miles on it.

99 Saturn SL2, bought it brand new: 145,000+ miles currently
03 Subaru Forester, 148,000+ miles currently

We bought the Subaru used with 141,000 miles on it, mileage didn't factor into things one bit. 100k+ today is like 10,000 miles in a car, insignificant. I'd have no problems driving either of our cars across the country right now.
