How come there are no area codes that start with 1? (I.E. 1XX)

I think it has something to do with international dialing, although I am just guessing...

Or, you're right, it's a conspiracy...

Anyone know?

is this some conspiracy?

Which number do you have to press to make a long distance call?

1, but thats a seperate issue... You still have to dial an area code after dialing 1.

some places require you to press 9 to make an outside call. since you dial an area code 1(xxx), it would be dialing 911. 😉

Yep, codes that start with 1 are international country codes I believe.

Naa, i dont think thats it... For instance to call the netherlands

you dial

1+country code+phone #

Most country codes are 2 digits, some being 3 starting with a 0.

That dosent really explain why no area codes are 1xx?

let's assume you live in area code 123, right next to area code 124. You want to make a local call to area code 124. How would you do that?
That's why there are no area codes starting w/ 1.

That sir, sounds like a correct answer. 🙂

the 1 before the area or country code let's the phone company know your're dialing the code. Otherwise the phone would try to make a connection after the first 7 or 10 digits you punch in. The 1 makes it wait until an entire area or country code, plus the number is entered.

you would dial 1-124-xxx-xxxx unless i'm missing something.

If its a local call you wouldnt dial a 1, even if its a different area code...

let's assume you live in area code 254 next to area code 255. You want to local call 255, how would you do that?

so? they can't design the phone system so it waits until all the numbers are entered, then makes a decision?

Do you have the 500 billion dollars it would cost to overhaul the system? 😀

How would it know you're done? Wait a period of time? That would piss of those who are impatient.

Good job, that makes sense.

yep, it would wait a second or something. and it wouldn't cost 500 billion dollars, give me a break.

1-255-xxx-xxxx

how do you 'local call' to a different area code?

So in response to notfred's original question, why couldn't you dial 1-124-xxx-xxxx.

Cause you're making a local call, not a LD call. Dialing the 1 first indicatesa LD call.

I'll use south florida for example...

We now have 10 digit dialing because another area code (754) is interweaved with our own (954)

If we call people in the other area code, we dont have to dial 1 because its a local call.
