How come there are no area codes that start with 1? (I.E. 1XX)

let's assume you live in area code 254 next to area code 255. You want to local call 255, how would you do that?

1-255-xxx-xxxx

how do you 'local call' to a different area code?

um, how but manhattan to queens. 212-xxx-xxxx to 718-xxx-xxx. i'm not sure if a 1 is needed before the 718 though.

It has everything to do with international dialing. Nation codes start with 1. USA is 1. England is 110 IIRC. Etc.
