<< Probably because we've never actually been to the moon!!!! It was faked and one of the greatest government cover-ups!

And yes, I am 100% serious in my statement!
>>

Trust me - the greatest government coverup is one you and i have never heard about and no one will hear about for a long long time.

On the issue of returning to the moon. I think it would be great if we did to set up some long term experiments, and I would also support not sending people there, just sending robots - like we have done on mars in the past few/many years. however the main issue is money and nasa doesn't have a blank check for a budget. so i don't think we will return until as someone else said china gets set to go in the next tens years or when ever they are planning it.

IMHO, a moon base will be a precurser to a mars human exploration. The first questions on inter planetary travel are being answered with the ISS. To stay on terra firma for a long period of time and do engineering and scientific studies in low gravity can certainly be done first from the surface of the moon.

I predict 20 years from now, plans will be underway and the pieces of a moon base will be assembled,dis-assembled, and ready for launch to the moon, in the second phase of inter-planetary travel. It will be multi national as is the ISS and will become a priority.

The only thing to short change this project will be the lack of will power on the part of governments to live in peace, renounce war and desension by violent means, or some other compelling global need.

Want a good reason to go to the moon? We just had a near earth object miss this planet by just a few hundred thousand miles, and the kicker is we disdn't even see it coming, and didn't know it came by until 4 days after it passed. Thats' this week.

What awaits us next week?

At least from the moon we could establish more observation posts looking at the cosmos. It seems much more attractive from there than the 150 mile orbit of a telescope that is short on life span now.;)

<< How are we risking peoples lives? We did it once in the late 60s when we were not as technologically advanced and we did it safely, surely we should be able to do it again safely. Shoot, we have all that research and development from the first time we went up. Expense? What expense? The bulk of expenses on anything is research and development. We already have that!

We won't go back because we can't and we didn't!

P.S. datalink7, that comment of my IQ and my education wasn't a conceited remark, it was a qualification statement. I'm not some backwoods hick that thinks that the moon is made out of cheese.
>>

You could have just said you are not some uneducated individual who believes whatever he is told. By saying "genius level IQ" you come off as arrogant and conceited.

Also, it currently costs over 2 billion a year just for space shuttle launches. And launching a ship to the moon would cost more than a shuttle launch. We probably don't even have an opperational moon lander any more, so building one is added cost. And what would we gain? Answer me that. We have been there several times already. Untill we have the capabilities for an actual moon base, there is no reason to go back.

And we would be risking peoples lives. There is always a chance for error, no matter how small. Apollo 13 for instance. Or what about that explorer that crashed into mars recently because some dumbass didn't convert from inches to centimeters or some stupid small detail like that?

Aceman, if it was faked to beat the Soviets, and to make JFK's 'end of this decade' deadline, why would the government then fake another five landings in the next few years?? If they were faking it, it would be only necessary to 'stage' it once...then you're done...it would be redundant and risky to keep 'faking' it.

We haven't gone back to the moon for one simple reason: The sole purpose originally was to beat the Russians, we both wanted nukes on the moon. Now there is no russia, no need to put weapons on the moon.

People, simmer down now!

Since both sides know so much about the moon, how many countries have successfully returned moon rocks and soil to earth?

I never get PMed so if you want send the answer that way

I'm all for people going to the moon. I hope they blow it up so that people have to live underground for thousands of years, and slowly evolve and breed themselves into a very meticulous caste system. Where those who live up on the earth live in a eutopia, but the elderly of the 'land dwellers' get eaten by the 'underground dwellers.'

They don't ring. You get this hollow thud type of sound, same as when you tap on a rotten melon.
