high resolution monitor vs. ultra-low resolution television screen. interlacing, etc. you can see more of the artifacts from compression on your monitor than your tv can display.

Winnar :)

You're also generally watching movies much much closer to a monitor than you would be to a TV.

Are you using a CRT monitor?
If so, turn the resolution down to 640x480, and it should look as good as a TV.
But a TV will look better because it doesn't upscale the video, which causes artifacts and blurriness, and it has much better contrast.

You are using crappy software. DVD's can be upscaled up to 1080i and look pretty crisp at over 6' wide using a projector.

PC's are generally regarded one of the best ways to view a dvd and can achieve as good results as a $1000 dvd player. To get this quality you gotta do a bit of reading and experimenting.

What program are you using to watch the DVDs?
The only artifacts I can see on DVDs when I see them on the PC are minor compression artifacts, introduced when the MPEG2 data was rendered. I use PowerDVD, with hardware acceleration enabled in the Configuration -> Video section. No interlacing or pixelation artifacts, and almost no CPU utilization, courtesy of my Radeon 9800 Pro's MPEG2 decoding acceleration.

The awful Nvidia DVD software that came with my 6800 is a joke. I couldn't figure out why DVDs that looked great on my old PC looked really bad on the new one. I had a copy of Win DVD that came with my Mobo, and it solved the problem. The Nvidea DVD player software is the worst I have ever tried!

One word- Blurry!

NVDVD 2.27 shipped w/ my BFG 6800GT, so I updated it to 2.55 and the video look almost as crisp as PowerDVD 5. It's far from being 'blurry'.

I use a Radeon 9200, driving a CRT through the VGA port at 1024x768 @ 75Hz, and using the TV-out at 1024x768 @ 60Hz/NTSC, and I get awful "tearing" on DVDs, while watching them in MPC via the TV-out. I've switched to using either the VMR7 or VMR9 mode, using XP SP1, and they look a lot "cleaner" than in just regular overlay mode, but the tearing is really annoying. I'm using the 4.12 Cats.

Anyone else have that problem?
