How Cold Is It Down South?

My wife is bitching about being cold again. She's been harping about moving south for twenty years now. At this moment, it's 74 degrees in here. Freezing, eh?

I keep the A/C at about this same temperature during the summer, so she squawks about that, too. She wears a sweater to work, because they keep their thermostat at a frigid 74 degrees also... the bastards!

I told her if we move south, it won't be any better, because they use A/C even more than we do! I'm right, aren't I? It's 64 degrees outside now, at 10:45PM. I imagine it gets nippy at night there too, eh?
 
Where are you now? Where in the south would you be interested in moving? And I hope you love humidity.
 
Fork no, I HATE humidity! We're in Northeast Ohio. We both love Virginia and the west side of North Carolina. I know what to expect. I'll be out working in the damn heat and humidity, and she'll still have to contend with A/C in her job. I know their A/C season is longer than ours by a few months, right?

A/C season is from roughly late May to late September.

EDIT- mostly to cut the humidity on the ends of that range.

 
<----Palm Beach Co. FL here, at 11pm, it's around 75-80. I keep the thermostat at 76, comfortable for me. Humidity a bigger factor than heat. You need the AC to keep the humidity down. Lowest it gets here in Dec-Jan at night is 50's, MAYBE 45 on an ultra-cold night.


 
The truth is, she has poor circulation. When the nurse checks her blood pressure, she yells for the doctor to come quick, because it's so low! My two sons and I feel perfectly happy at 74 degrees. Oh well, she started puberty early, maybe she'll start menopause and the hot flashes early, too. That'll shut her up! 😉
 
A/C season is 12 months, or at least it should be IMO 🙂

You are right. A/C is used much more because the humidity makes it too unbearable otherwise for those of us whose bodies would be sweating to cool us off. (since humidity prevents sweat evaporation, so your natural cooling system doesn't work). That same humidity makes it seem colder than it is if you are the type who does not sweat.

P.S. 74 is too damn hot!

I am going to hazard a guess that she is anorexic. Most of the always cold types are that way because their body isn't capable of maintaining normal temperature from starvation.

You big baby....it's not that bad. GA cools off sufficiently most nights to where you can be outside without passing out. Even my 8-months-pregnant wife thinks it's nice out tonight (we went out for a stroll and dinner).

 
Dont move here, its crowded enough with people that wanna escape the snow, and its making people like me wanna trade places because this heat is driving me insane. Sitting in traffic with no AC for one. I hate Hellston, or um Houston, too many other people wanna call this place home also. Its getting more and more congested here, and making my hot head hotter. Progress sux.

Northern Virginia gets pretty muggy in the summers, but nothing like down south. Winters probably dip into the 20's on a really cold day, usually in the 30's, and 4 inches is a snow storm.

Southwest Virginia is beautiful mountainous country, with Roanoke being pretty much the only major city, the rest is hickville. Summers are hot but not real humid, winters are in the 20's, and a snowstorm is over 6 inches.

You probably get lake effect snow up there, so that's no problem for you, right?
 
I ain't making the move. Honestly, I KNOW how it will end up. We'll be scurrying from one air conditioned building to another, and she'll still be cold all the time. Every restaurant, store, theater and home we visit will be too cold for her. At home she'll be too cold and paying a super high electric bill for the privilege. Makes no sense to me. I feel sorry for her, but moving isn't the answer. The pisser is how often she whines about it. There's really nothing more to discuss... DAMN!

Actually, that's not true. Move to SoCal (where it's 80, sunny, and low humidity 365 days per year) and you're good to go. 😛

Edit- In all seriousness, you do adapt to living in the South. I rarely use my car A/C these days because I prefer the fresh air whereas I couldn't live without it the first few years I was down here (having moved from MI). 😛

 
I had a Mexican friend (who's living in LA right now) come visit me in Florida this past weekend....

The temperature was 97F with about 85% humidity.... Even he was complaining about how nasty the heat was 😀

You walk from the front door to your car (10 feet away), and your back gets sweaty.

Hell I can deal with snow just fine. It's the heat of summer that screws me. I'd have to get some kind of air conditioned work if I moved down there, but my skills lie in the trades. Are the machine shops air conditioned there? Crap, I don't want to go back in a shop anyway... Ugh.

She's got an Uncle in Charlottesville, VA, who could probably hook us up with some work. We also fell in love with the Winston-Salem area of NC, which has similar weather. Bah, it's all moot. We'd be in A/C all the time and she'd still be complaining...
 
Alright, alright. A serious suggestion. Someone hit on it before, but the west coast offers more moderate temps. Something either in northern CA or Southern Oregon may do it. Go the the Weather Channel site, and you can check out the monthly highs and lows for most locations. Be better than guessing at it.
