the management here bought one of the PMs a bigger shelf to put his kids creations on. i have diablo II toys on my desk, as well as a ghost rider and punisher figures, and some assorted skull items on my desk. i have a bunch of pics of my kids too. uppers here dont care at all, as long as the bottom line is taken care of. i also have tons of spec books, blue prints and cut sheet crap all over my desk, as well as a test table next to me covered in plc parts, cabling and other knickknacks.

Same here. All I have to do is drop my keys on the desk and leave.

I have the bare minimum too ... the only extra thing hanging in my cube is a paper printout of a 'save paper ad' :D

The owners of the company I work at actually held a competition for who could decorate their workspace the most to match their personality. First place had a cash prize of $450. They said they were sick of seeing nothing but blank walls and empty desks. I now have my walls lined with various Xbox game pictures from my old Xbox magazines. A bunch of Corvette stuff lined up for my car interests and a few bouncy balls and Nerf guns as well. The owners were the ones that bought said Nerf guns.

It's a small software development company. Most of the time I get to work and take off my shoes. Stroll around in socks all day long. Position is a little bit of sales, and project manager. I'm happy with it.

Last last summer when I actually had my own desk, I deliberately cluttered my desk within the first month to make it look like I was productive. That and I followed the lead of everyone else. During that same summer, I worked IT so visited about 2000 cubicles at a number of different offices. If the desk was in use, even by a temp, you could tell cause there were coffee stains, at least 2 ceramic cups, stacks and stacks of paper (some obviously not touched in months) and quite a few outdated photos. There were at most 2 desks at each office of over 100 people where the main workspace was actually clean and organized.

I also raided manager/director/general manager offices and will admit that they had the "cleaner" desks. Still a lot of clutter, but I would probably attribute their cleanliness to lack of attendance (off-site work) than organization.

On that note, for the love of god, please keep your keyboard free of food and grease. Any IT/temp user will probably be 'sharing' your computer. One time I had to get a papertowel to cover the keys cause the user got it all sticky.

QFT. Lack of personal items makes it look like you could go at any time, which surprisingly is a good thing in this day and age.

yeah that one

anyhow, where's the link to the 'study' that said that cluttered desks were a sign of efficient workers... :p not that this relates to that study directly, but you don't have to have an organized-looking desk to be a good worker :p

I never saw the study but made the assumption, since I did see a study while back that said kids with messy rooms were smarter than the kids with tidy rooms.

Contempt is not an adjective, and I only bring that up because I'm confused about what you were trying to say. Did you mean to use a different word?

The only thing I have is a tequila bottle on my credenza. If that makes me look unprofessional, too bad, I'm the boss.

I have a plastic cup I brought from home and my personal red stapler, also from home. No, I'm not joking about the stapler. The accounting dept (where I work) used to have a red stapler of it's own before I started working there, but one of the employees admitted to swiping it and giving us a much poorer quality stapler in its place.

I have 5 photos which I took myself of landscapes and stuff hung in my cubicle. That's the only "personal" things. Oh and a couple XKCD comics and a daily dilbert calendar.

The rest of the clutter is work related boring crap.

I never saw that as unprofessional, nor do I ever hear upper management comment on personal items being unprofessional.

What is seen as unprofessional is having a dozen Dilbert strips hanging up, all of which have management as the target of the joke. I find Dilbert hilarious personally, but constructing a wall of Dilberts all of which basically say "Management people are idiots" does not help you move up.

Dilberts about technology, interpersonal situations, conflict between departments, etc. = no problem.
Dilberts which all have a common theme about managers = does not make you look good.

No one will say anything, but they notice.

I have a bunch of xkcd comics hanging on my desk. My coworkers love them. Managers wouldn't even understand them.

I had about 40 despair.com demotivational posters and about 20 snow globes from around the world in old office. Amusingly, it was one of the lesser decorated offices in my row!

One guy had two overstuffed recliner chairs, an end table, and about a dozen plants! We called it the "employee lounge" :)

Now that I work in a 24/7 operations center, I now have NO personal effects in my work area at all. Perhaps I should bring in my red Swingline stapler... although I'm worried that my boss might steal it or someone will fill it with inferior staples that will bind :)

Your post is funny given the recent topic of the Dilbert strips. :)

I think he meant content. He is either a bad speller or doesnt know the difference between content and contempt.
