I can't imagine using vi to code unless it's just a few small changes direct on the server by SSHing to it. I like to be able to have tabs, be able to easily select and move text, and interact quickly with many files. Vi can probably do some of those things but you have to google how each time as it's all command based.
See... on one hand, I want to point out that after you google them a couple times, you remember the commands.
On the other hand, I'm kinda horrified by the thought of SSHing into a server to make live code changes, no change tracking, source control, config backup, automated deployment, etc.
Yeah the only time I would do this is if I need to test something real quick or apply a very minor change that I also applied locally. Like say, a spelling mistake. Otherwise I'm coding in a proper GUI text editor locally on dev. Eventually sync to test, then sync to prod.
