Yup, best to not expect much, you aren't going to be disillusioned. 🙂Well, that's more or less still the same. After all the time I've spent working with massive corporations I've come away being surprised that anything works at all.

But as long as you didn't injure yourself, that pain may be good for you.I spent a few hours on the working end of a shovel yesterday...my aging body is NOT happy with me today...

Good back work, shoveling. Arms, shoulders, legs too. Yeah, it's a workout. If you can't handle a workout, well, it's a wake up call. My take on it. I have several shovels, use 'em once in a while. In fact I figure to shovel out 2 feet of soil, making a trench 2 feet wide and about 14 feet long to plant my tomatoes this year. Once that trench is dug, toss on 2-3 wheel barrows of DIY compost, mix, then shovel all back in, stomp, then plant my seedlings. I've done that most years for 25 years. I might be a little sore next day, no problemo! You won't hear me saying "I'm getting too old for this." The weather's been so fine, I may do it any time now. Don't know if the seedlings are for sale yet, but can prep the ground anyway.Using a shovel is always a great reminder of how old you are getting. 😛 I wanted to do my weeping tiles by hand years back, after about an hour of digging by hand I realized how insane that was and hired it out lol. Same deal with snow shoveling, when we get dumped 1+ foot at once it's a huge undertaking to do by hand, I have a snowblower now. 😛

I’ve worked at an intern position once, I was good in theory but had a lack of practice. If I asked my boss to help me, he was starting to tell me all the theoretical stuff, that I’ve already known. But when I’ve been doing something wrong, that was entirely my mistake in his view. He has already told me how to do it, hasn’t he? And this situation repeated over and over until I’ve realized he doesn’t know how to do it in practice! And I’ve decided to quit. Maybe it wasn’t the best decision)My boss likes to tell me how easy everything is. He's half joking when he says it. If he were serious, I'd refuse to do a single thing more til he showed me the correct way it should be done, cause I'm obviously doing it wrong. The company would shut down if I quit doing what I do, cause I'm the only one that knows how :^D
Or manually setting jumpers all over a MB to set CPU frequency/bus rate/voltage/ HDD types. There was no automatic detection of anything. All for a blazing 386-16 LOL!.i think you mean autoexec.bat + config.sys and how you had to edit that manually, and if you goof'd you had to do all the lines all over again..
oh crap... did i just reveal how old i am... 😱

I thought the same thing on my last full time job. And I think it was pretty true. Of course, they could have hired someone else who knew what I knew, had the capabilities to learn it and get rid of me. Well, I enjoyed it while it lasted but the company was basically bought out by outside interests, I guess because it ran into financial difficulties. They basically were farming out development to India and one day they just canned me and showed me the door, literally didn't let me out of their sight until they escorted me out carrying a cardboard box with my personal possessions! I wouldn't have taken a paper clip, I'm way to proud to have thought of doing even that. That was 2 days after 9/11!My boss likes to tell me how easy everything is. He's half joking when he says it. A couple years ago we passed by a 486 someone had put in their driveway with a "free" sign on it, I took it home, replaced the CMOS battery, and my teenager got to find out about setting the tracks and sectors on a hard drive, interrupts, etc 😀Or manually setting jumpers all over a MB to set CPU frequency/bus rate/voltage/ HDD types. Aren't you mid 30s like me? Thats not old age yet, thats being a pussy. Heading out to dig a trench by hand today. Bet I run circles around the 20 year old kid that works for me.
My situation is fairly unique. To find my replacement, they'd need someone that can work with old gear, do their own thinking, and be willing to work for lowish pay. Not an impossible task, and enough money could get a replacement, but it would be exceedingly difficult. This company is winding down. We're all getting old, so there's little point in throwing a ton of money into it. Just keep on going til it's time to stop.Of course, they could have hired someone else who knew what I knew, had the capabilities to learn it and get rid of me.
At least you didn't talk about vi edit
Did a lot of C programming in vi. And rcs to look at code changes.

Alas, I have been remiss! Would you do us the honor of posting your poem?I wrote a poem about this around 40 years ago, it's title is "Everything's Off." I'm ready for the apocalypse.
I'll have to find it... it's on paper...Alas, I have been remiss! Would you do us the honor of posting your poem?

I wrote it before the personal computer was invented. Analog does work, you know.eeewww...analog.
I thought I might have digitized it but can't find my poetry in my data, so guess not. I have the book, gotta find it...I wrote it before the personal computer was invented. Analog does work, you know.

Actually, '77 is around when I wrote that particular poem. I didn't get a PC until ~1993.The Commodore PET, TRS-80, and Apple II were out in 1977![]()
I can't imagine using vi to code unless it's just a few small changes direct on the server by SSHing to it. I like to be able to have tabs, be able to easily select and move text, and interact quickly with many files. Vi can probably do some of those things but you have to google how each time as it's all command based.
Oh yah, did you have to deal with punch card read heads no longer being made and had to replace it all with a touchscreen system?
True story.
Oh, that totally sucks 🙁. The first computer that I programmed used FORTRAN IV with punch cards.
