A friend of mine made the switch to Mac. Bought a Mac Air, 24" Mac PC thing, etc.

We're not friends anymore.

The price.

Insert some obligatory mac fan saying "it's the same price as an equally equipped pc" - actually while close the PC could probably be had for slightly cheaper, significantly so if you start throwing in factors like coupons/discounts. But the more pressing factor is - i wouldn't buy an equally equipped PC, i'd buy a cheaper one with parts that'll still do the job. OS is a moot point/personal preference. I'd rather have win7 on it. The aesthetics don't actually appeal to me that much - but the build quality certainly does. It is better than the competition in many ways, but not enough to justify the amazing price tag.

Being a mean uncle that I'm, I put the kid & his snotty mom in their place by showed them that I can do what ever his Mac could on a more powerful Linux laptop for less than $500 CAD.

But, but the Mac Guy said...

Why so much hate? :(

the lack of freedom and the way apple deals with customers and such bothers me. OS X is meh, as far as im concerned (my brothers imac has given me no shortage of headache) and their products are pretty much overpriced. i just have absolutely zero desire to own anything made by apple.

i dont like microsoft, but i definitely have windows on a couple of things. i wouldnt even run OS X in a vm.

The OP is 100% wrong. Apple overprices their bullshit machines with coolness. It's a gimmick and I'm glad I understand.

Gee, I've gotta agree with the OP here. When you compare a $1000 macbook to a $400 laptop, the macbook wins hands down.

Now compare your $1,00 macbook to this $900 Dell. And yes I know that this one doesn't have the webcam so it doesn't match spec-for-spec, but there are tons of other configs available.

Should I have said "$300" to tip off your sarcasm meter about agreeing with the OP?

I don't care about appearance so much as price and features. I'm using a T21 right now, and believe it or not it does everything I need it to do at the moment (type, browse, watch video). You want to know what it cost me? $50 shipped (from a fellow AT member :)). Now that's value. Plus, I'm sanding down the case later this week and painting it color shift green/purple or mirrored silver (not sure yet, hard to decide) and adding my own custom phoenix decal. So it will look slick, unique, and best of all it cost me less than $100. I won't be able to run Crysis on it, but that's not what I need, anyway (desktop is capable).

So that's how I can not buy a macbook. Enjoy looking down on us poor folk that can only buy ugly windows laptops, like the one you own.

Refurbished, 6-cell battery, ick.

But you make a good point otherwise.

I'd like to hear the explanation how OSX is inferior... It's far the most productive flavor of Unix I've tried. And that includes the SGI Fuel that's sitting right next to my hackintosh.

Thinkpad were the first thing I was looking at, but the x series you mention are a bit too small and under powered. The regular T series are big and bulky and go for about 1200 (vs 1400 for a macbook) and while the T400s looks phenomenal, it starts at 1800.

So I can't find something that really hits the spot.

i have a t42 right now, and im debating replacing the screen (bad backlight and my backlight repair appears to have went awry with some buzzing sound that doesnt sound too great) or getting the x60s. with a bit of shopping you can find one for $350ish. i saw one go for $250 on CL a bit ago and was pissed I missed the deal. with the high resolution screen you don't need a big laptop.

I guess it's all personal preference. good luck on your search.

Would you rather have her spend the $2k and have the kid crawling to apple for help or she can save $1500 and have the kid come to you for help?

Eh honda civic will get you from A to B too, but people still buy Porsches...

Just like with everything in life, good industrial design, UI and materials go for premium money.

That's the key. Either OP doesn't understand that people have different needs/preferences, or he's a soon-to-be Apple "I'm better than you because I paid extra to buy something sleek and purty"ass. Or he's just a troll, but I'm hoping not.

For the record, I like Macbooks, but not for the price. People that like them and buy them are fine as anyone else in my book, as long as they don't ask stupid questions like the thread title.

Its window management sucks. But is very pretty.

It is inferior because the way you can window manage is horrible. Also in linux you can use scale (Scale = > version of expose). Thats just one example... many more that have to deal with customization and other aspects.

I like to play with osx, but its the worse of the 3. Both in security (fact based on security reports) and usability (more opinion based, but the facts back it up, IE: Window management).

Indeed but Porsches still give you advantages. While a mac creates disadvantages, in most cases.

And of course porsches dont have the same insides as hondas. Unlike macs which have same insides as dells, hps, etc.
