A friend of mine made the switch to Mac. Bought a Mac Air, 24" Mac PC thing, etc.
We're not friends anymore.

Being a mean uncle that I'm, I put the kid & his snotty mom in their place by showed them that I can do what ever his Mac could on a more powerful Linux laptop for less than $500 CAD.

Gee, I've gotta agree with the OP here. When you compare a $1000 macbook to a $400 laptop, the macbook wins hands down.
Now compare your $1,00 macbook to this $900 Dell. And yes I know that this one doesn't have the webcam so it doesn't match spec-for-spec, but there are tons of other configs available.

They are ridiculously overpriced, and run an inferior OS.
OS X is inferior? But I've got the box right here, says it's the worlds most advanced!

Yeah, I think it's fairly well explained. Macs are nice, sure, if you don't mind paying 60-100% more than you need to for the same amount of computing power. Then again, if you buy your PC's based on the fact that they're "thin and shiny/sleek" then you have other problems....but if it works for you, then by all means, go ahead.

I'd like to hear the explanation how OSX is inferior... It's far the most productive flavor of Unix I've tried. And that includes the SGI Fuel that's sitting right next to my hackintosh.

Eh honda civic will get you from A to B too, but people still buy Porsches...
Just like with everything in life, good industrial design, UI and materials go for premium money.
