Just because other people have turned it into a commercial holiday does not mean you have to celebrate it that way. I do think people have lost the meaning, the same way they have to think of Thanksgiving as just being a dinner party.

My niece came over all upset because she wasn't getting much work , frustrated at how many people she had to buy for, really worried people would be upset about what they got. That is when I told her the best gift she could give me was just to be there for Christmas dinner. To come over and all of us just to enjoy each others company.

I really don't want anything for Christmas and I pray that nobody puts themselves through what my niece was going through just to get me something. I would rather have a hug than a gift someone had to struggle over.

I have a basic understanding with family and friends that I do not participate in gift giving. If I'm invited to a family meal I'll participate and help out where I can, but it should not be taken that I will attend.

My wife and I exchange gifts of a small dollar amount and generally just enjoy the time off together.

We do however go to my Christmas party because it's a free meal and there are cash prizes for both employees and guests.
