I went out to dinner last night... paid the bill, it was 26.65.

When I get up this morning and check my checkin account balance, the resturant charged me 31.98.

WTF? We gave the waitress a tip in cash... why is there over $5 more on my card?

Call them and bitch. It will get adjusted. I went to this restaurants "Grand Opening" and it was a big mistake. They didnt really have their act together yet and they double charged my credit card. I called and bitched and they took off the doublecharge and also knocked 25% off my bill for the error. I didn't even ask for that.

I would wait till monday to worry about it. Sometimes they hold alittle more then they should. It takes a day or two, but the real charge will be reflected.

You don't have to drive there. Just call them. Ask for the manager/owner.

I've never once seen that happen to anything I've purchased using my debit card. I'm not even sure if that's legal.

Yes they usually do that to make sure you have enough $ to pay for tip in case. It will clear after two business days. Just wait till either monday or tues to see if it changes or not.

Correct.
  • 1) Do yourself a favor and get a real bonified credit card instead of a debit card. Why? If you piss off the server they can write down your entire debit card number, debit card code, expiration date, issuing bank and name and fraudulently use your debit card to drain your bank account down to $0. Yes most banks offer protection on debit cards but it usually takes 1-2 for them to complete their investigation while you have checks bouncing left and right. Save yourself this hassle with a real credit card.
  • 2) As WoofyJr already stated this is only an authorization (hold) on the funds, the charge will hard post within the next 2-3 business days and it should only be $26.65 if it's not then print out your ATM statement showing recent transactions or internet banking screen and pay a visit to the restaurant manager.
  • 3) This also happens at gas stations, hotels, ec. So again it's adviseable to use your credit card or it's time to get one.

the PIN is only needed at an ATM to withdrawl money, not at a store, or in the Resturant's register.

It only takes a high school-level education in electronics to be able to rig together a box that records your PIN.

Come to think of it, people at the Pizza Pizza down the street from my university campus were busted a year ago for doing just that.

that is f*cking ridiculous... what right does a restaurant have to make a temp. authorization for my tip? If any place did that to me I would never eat there again (or at least never leave them a tip)!

Why would they need to check if you have enough money to pay for tip? What if you feel the waiter/waitress didn't deserve a tip?
