Why would I want to do extra work when I don't have too?
rolleye.gif
If you have to make comments like that then you are one INCREDIBLY arrogant mofo.

WTH are you talking about? As a driver you have a certain amount of responsibility to perform "extra work" including - gasp! - paying attention, and putting your body, including your feet, in a position that will allow you to quickly respond to emergencies. If this is too stressful for you, I suggest you take the bus, to ensure your safety and that of others on the road.

Is this a joke or something?

EXACTLY. I just want to drive calmly and not have to upshift/downshift everytime Im at a light or get stuck in traffic. Id think a stick is a horrible way to get around in the city.

However, there are times when Im on the expressway where the music starts pumping and it gets you excited and you just NEED a stickshift at that point. Music makes me crazy in the car. If my POS Intrepid didnt start shaking violently beyond 80 MPH, Id have a lot of speeding tickets.

i love driving stick, id never go back to auto. i feel like a bitch when driving an auto and i think any fast car should be a 5sp. I would prolly have gotten a grand prix gtp if it wasnt for the fact that they are all autos.

Also, the best of both worlds is a semi-automatic manual transmission ala Toyota's SMT, Ferrari's F1, or BMW's SMG. And I'm not talking about those pu$$y a$$ Tiptronics, Autosticks, and SportMatic jobies.

So you can manually shift when you wanna faster than a traditional manual, and act like a total lazy mofo when you want to.

Accords are DAMN fun little cars. My 89 DX was very go-kart like on back roads, and it had under 100 hp!

Viper GTS

Yeah, raw horsepower is not all there is to driving fun. My first car was an '85 Toyota SR5 wagon, with, as I recall, 75 bhp, and a 5-speed. That thing was a blast! With 4WD, it made winter driving in the Midwest a ton of fun - lots of (low) power slides and hand brake turns galore.

Yea its the car itself that makes driving fun. Its fun pushing my 88 Accord to the limits and beyond just for the hell of it. I can't imagine doing it in a new car though unless it's ultra sporty or something

And I like automatics better too - less to mess up. Miss a shift, downshift to the wrong gear, dropping the clutch, etc etc can make for some expensive repairs. True you miss out on the "fun" of driving a stick but I'll stick to an auto

I prefer auto. I'm not a car guy by any means. Just give me a vehicle that gets me from point A to point B and never breaks down. that's all I ask really...

Some of you are torn between the auto and manual... I guess the Sequential shifter is the kind of transmission for you... Like in the Celica GTS Auto or Prelude Auto... Drive auto or put it in Sequential shift mode and you can control your shifting with a push of a button.... Still no fun compared to the true manual =P

Those aren't sequentials...those are automatic transmissions that think they are smarter than everyone else. True semi's are:

F1
SMG
SMT

I personally would say just the opposite, though I am admittedly a diehard stick afficianado. An automatic tranny is MUCH more complex than a stick, and while a manual transmission normally will require a clutch replacement every 50-100K miles (I have good clutch discipline and mine last a LONG time), it is a whole lot cheaper than rebuilding or replacing an automatic. As long as you have a modern car with a synchronized manual transmission, and a reasonable amount of care, it is easy to drive a stick without ever endangering the transmission.

Dude, not even. Though you seem to have a valid reason to need cruise control and use it reguarly, you come off sounding like you have better things to do then actually drive when you're behind the wheel. This makes you seem lazy. If you do truly have a need for the CC then I'm glad it helps you. If not, then you are just being lazy and an @sshole.

Personally, I love my 5speed. Makes driving so fun. I sit in traffic fairly regularly living in LA and it hasn't gotten to me yet, tho I've only been driving 2 years. Like others have commented, it makes driving my (relatively) plebian 91 Accord a blast to drive, especially with its upgraded suspension:D:D

From everything I have read, BMW's SMG II is the only one of those three that is not slower to accelerate than an actual manual. The actual shifts are actuated very quickly, but getting the cars moving is more of a chore with an SMG than with a stick - I know the SMT-equipped Celica is a full 1.4 seconds slower to 60 than a stick - and there is generally a delay in the actuation after the paddle is pulled. The SMG II at least allows the driver to set the tranny for a very quick, harsh-shifting performance mode, but even then the transmission will only allow a limited number of high-performance launches between clutch replacements.

To me a real stick gives the driver the chance to vary his shift technique with each shift depending on circumstances, rather than placing the transmission into a particular shifting mode. That said, I fully admit I would LOVE to spend a weekend with an SMG II-equipped M3!

You should look at getting an orthotic back cushion or something to make your car more habitable. Volvos have seats designed with the help of a chiropractor, and are very comfy. Honestly you are not making a good case for your safety as a driver, and if you really can't stay reasonably comfortable after driving for a while in a safe postition (hands and ten and two o'clock, foot on the gas), you may seriously need to rethink the whole driving thing.

I think what got people riled up was the fact that you said it was like being in hell to drive without CC, and said you liked to daydream while driving. As a fellow motorist, I don't relish the prospect of daydreaming drivers, and the comment about hell just sounds a little primadonna-ish. I am not trying to attack you at all, just accounting for the reception your comments received.
