How can I synchronize my desktop and notebook?

I have a desktop running Win XP Pro and a notebook running Win 2000 Pro. I have them networked so that I can easily exchange files between the two.

Is there a way that I can synchronize all the files in a certain directory, say "my documents" so that when I take the notebook for a weekend and work with it I can simply connect to the desktop and make it so the desktop contains the updated files?

I know I can simply transfer everything from the notebook to the desktop (or vice-versa) but there are quite a few files and many times only 10 or 20 scattered files need to be updated.

I also know that I can do a search by date. Problem with this is it is not automatic and I still need to fix/recreate subdirectories I may have changed.

I'm hoping there is a way for this to be accomplished.

I would really appreciate anyone willing to donate the time to help me out with this if it can be done!

Thanks

I always equalize (synchronize is a technically incorrect term because by definition it relates to a time function) my desktop files to my notebook before taklng off on a trip. There are special software packages that do that, but a fairly easy way is to have Explorer copy and entire data folder from one machine to the other. Another tool I have started to use is what is referred to as a "pen" or "key" drive that you slip into a USB port as a lettered drive. With a 256 MB one, you can pretty much put folders of data files on one and just slip it into your case. Another approach is to keep all data files on a Firewire or USB external minidrive and just take that with you. It plugs into the notebook and desktop. That way no copying is necessary, and when you return home, you have all the changes ready to plug into your desktop.

I'm sure if you search on some free download sites you should be able to find software that does that. Reason being, as a programmer, I could probably write such a tool in less than a day, so there should probably be tons to such apps out there (considering their usefulness).

I downloaded and started using PowerDesk Pro v5.0 today, and it has a fold sync add-in included in the program. You can specific any folder on local or network drives, so it would be able to sync files between your desktop and laptop over the network.
