I kind of think ATI was caught with it's pants down. I don't think they were expecting nVidia's DX10 products to be as powerful as they are, or released as soon as they were (at least with the 8800 series, which showed up surprisingly fast after the 7000s), or both. Now they are trying to catch up rather than release uncompetitive cards. Just my theory.

This is all merger pains still being worked out. It might take a few years for AMD to construct a clockwork smooth running CPU/GPU shop.

I don't care what name is on the GPU in my rig... ATI / nVIDIA / whoever.

Right now... I have a 8800 GTS 640. The best DX10 card for $400-500 will be in my rig when crysis is released.

If things keep going the way they are, you already do... :frown:

Nvidia's mid range is as predicted. Anand does not recommend upgrading to these new parts unless you have a 7600GT or around there.

It couldn't be better for AMD as performance and features were predicatable. It would of been far worse if Nvidia actually had something of value for the mid-range segment.

We may never know exactly what's going on, but I'd be willing to bet that AMD isn't thrilled about paying all of their graphics people to work on something that's "already done" if it actually is. Probably a bad time to be an ATI employee, if I had to guess.

i think they do listen to us ... i believe they actually read these threads ... if not directly, at least indirectly

they DO care

enough to have viral marketing to us :p

and their FUD spinners have addressed our questions ... that Vj interview, for example

now we have to 'wait and see'

we're about to get *the answer* to that age old question:

Where's the Beef?

patience, threadhopper ;)

You know what's sad?? I lot of people out there know what the new ATI cards are capable of and how they perform already........they just can't tell us until the NDA is lifted.

I wanna know now!! ;)

I think this is the most likely answer, my guess is there is a little conflict of corporate culture between the ATI and AMD sides of AMD, hence why we're hearing R600 is ready (ATI side) yet they aren't releasing it (AMD side).

Maybe because the AMD low/midrange will be 65nm chips? and high end will be 80nm?

Did we all suddenly forget a full generation lasts a fair amount of time (15-18 months) with mid-cycle refresh roughly down the middle? (7800GTX introduced in June 2005 iirc, replaced by 8800GTS in October 2006 = 16 months)

Today is April or approximately 6 months since 8800's launch with 0 mid-range products until yesterday from Nvidia. What about the remaining 9-10 months? What about the mobile sector (remember laptops are gaining on desktops in terms of market share) for which neither company has products yet? What about the seasonality factor for videocard sales (shouldn't we expect greater sales in the 2nd half of the year for Tech? and back to school season - new computer purchases? Then the battle is just getting started).

Even if ATI loses out on the high-end due to 8800's head start (which is probably at most 10% of all their revenue for GPUs), as long as it is able to release the cards even within a month, they can easily recoup most of lost revenue by just dominating the mid- and low-end. And then we haven't even considered mobile segments.

What about the manufacturing costs of each GPU? Let's also not underestimate the power of proper pricing strategy (Wii is quickly catching up to Xbox360 having been released far behind). Things can quickly turn around if ATI can transition to 65nm process for their refresh products.

Right now there are simply too many factors to call Nvidia the winner of this gen just yet.

lol, yes because i intend to buy not only a 600HD, but also an rv630 and an rv610, all in the space of a week.

That's my line of thinking too. My guess is that the R600 was far behind the 8800 performance wise, and ATI didn't want to release a 5800 ultra to Nvidia's 9800 so they went back to the drawing board. All this "the card is complete and will be shipping next week" for the past 6 months has just been stalling on their part.

You may not... but Dell will... times about a few million or so.

Well right now Dell is selling 8600's, so I think they did not feel like waiting either.

that IS the problem ... most of these mega-bux deal buyers like to have their deals cut long in advance ...
not likely they are still waiting for a no-show - remember AMD *canceled* a hard-launch, already - so IF *i* were a buyer for a major OEM, i'd want to see 'product' before i committed to AMD

otoh, they ARE committing to nvidia

AMD *Can* recoup their losses - including 'prestige' - IF they really *deliver*

--a steller family of GPUs across-the-board

something *awesome* so much so that the industry says, "wow" ... AMD "Can" deliver
--if not ... too bad :p

i finally *get* what AMD is trying to do ... it took some real thought ... they are NOT stupid [really]

it's a HUGE gamble IMO

i still think they should hire me ... i can explain it a lot better than their fud-spinners do
:Q

:D

still ... i wish them all the very best luck and good timing in the world

That's where I think Nvidia is aiming these cards. At the OEM's. Sure they will release them retail for people not up to speed on benchmarks, etc. But what they are really meant for is to be really cheap to produce to still make a decent profit margin selling mass quanities of cards to the OEM's.

AMD has no choice in this. They simply don't have the cards ready to go yet. I think the biggest part of the reason right now (and why the previous "launch" was canceled) is that the drivers are still a mess. For everyone complaining (myself included) about the state of Nvidia drivers right now, we may be suprised (or not?) by some really bad ATI drivers in the beginning.

let me put [bluntly] what AMD is trying to say, in my own words:

"May 14, we will deliver an exceptional family of GPUs across-the-board that will *shame* our competition in an unprecedented hard launch that will instantly restore our prestige."

--lets wait and see ;)

If you don't like it, stay your ass out of the threads. You're complaing about the fact that people are complaining.

They are playing hard to get so that you ATI fans will go nuts and do whatever it takes to get your hands on one of their cards...
