how can a girl refuse to give her phone number?

I was thinking about this from a guy's perspective. A guy approaches a girl, starts a conversation, and then asks for her "digits". What could she possibly say besides "ok, here's my phone number"? What is she going to say... "no"? Somehow I can't picture that. Yet there must come a time when a girl just doesn't want to give out her phone number.

So girls, what's a line you would use to NOT give out your phone number? I need to know so I can think of smooth replies! :D

Here's a second question, for girls once again. So a guy has asked for you number, and you just gave it to him. Now, do you ask for his phone number too? Or do you only do so if you're interested? Or do you not ask for his number because you don't want to come off desperate? I know this is overthinking it a bit, but I'm curious about getting a female perspective on the issue.

haha..i've only lied about my phone number once to a girl to get her off my back..then i never showed up where she worked again (at a bookstore). I can't say that i've ever been given a wrong phone number, but was watching on my news that there's a service that you sign up and it's a rejection line. I'm looking for the link now.

edit: rejection hotline

Wow, that is awesome!

Ok, so I suppose a girl could just say "no", but I still have a hard time picturing it. Maybe because it seems so awkward.

guy: "I gotta go. Give me your phone number and we'll get together sometime."
girl: "no."

I guess I'm assuming that the conversation was going really well. Though, why would you ever ask for her number unless the conversation was going well?

There are those rejection numbers all across the country.

Tell them it's your cell phone and when you do a recorded message tells you the girl wants nothing to do to you.

Or, my favorite (happened to me once) the girl tells you her phone number is (your area code) 867 - 5309. It took me a few moments to realize what the girl did before I told her thanks for the number, tossed it, and went home alone. Awwwww yeah..

dfi - a line my female friends use - "Flattered, but no thanks" - but usually if the guy's got any senses, he knows whether or not the conversation's going well enough to ask for the number or not. Alternatively, I sense the "Help!" sign from them, and quickly head over with two drinks in hand and a "Hi honey, sorry I'm late - who's your friend?" Sometimes it has unexpected results - like a long-term friend suddenly "expressing emotion" so to speak ...

And as far as asking for his number - be honest with yourself. If you have no intention of calling him, don't ask. If you are genuinely interested in seeing him again - for whatever reason - then go ahead and ask. But just like you wouldn't want some handsome guy yanking your chain, don't pull ours either. It's not nice.

Restraining orders are just another way of saying "I love you."

In Arizona it would be: "So do I. It's called Smith and Wesson."
