They are beautiful, especially when combined with a princess cut IMHO.

Go for a nice ring that catches your eye - don't be too concerned about the size of the main rock. White gold is also a very nice alternative to platinum IMHO.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of a simple solitaire setting. Tiffany-style. She has indicated simlarly. I haven't been too impressed with the white gold rings that i have seen 5-10 years later... just seem to be a bit softer metal is all.

My ex-wife was 5'3 and 95-98 lbs. Her diamond was 0.6 carats and everyone thought it looked big on her hands. A 3/4 carat diamond would work, but push the limits of taste. A 1 carat and bigger diamond looked like crap on her thin fingers.

I got a round solitare, elevated extra high. I tossed just about any picture of her last year after she cheated on me one too many times. I doubt I have anything with the ring up close. Plus, I won't be able to post a picture until Monday even if I had it.

This is the look I want to avoid. True, that is a man and that isn't a diamond and that isn't 1 carat. But the point remains the same: too big and it'll only work if she was elderly as the elderly often wear bigger jewelry or if she had big fingers or if she wanted people to thing it was fake. (Is this enough of a generalization for you BillGates?)

carat only tell you about how much it weights. It never tell you how the diamond was cut. A deep/shallow cut diamond might looks small/big for a given carat.

A shallow or deep cut will also effect the sparkle.

You're right, but they generally shoot for pretty specific proportions. You won't find more than a couple of tenths of a milimeter difference between diamonds of the same weight (and cut) unless you're dealing with poorly cut diamonds.

Just go to a reputable, fine jeweler in your area and preferably not a mall chain. And keep in mind that despite the high divorce rate, a diamond should last forever so cost should only be relevant to what you can afford. Personally, I think 1.00 TCW is the perfect size if you're going solitaire but color/clarity/cut is vital, as has been mentioned. A 1.5 TCW in J/K I2-I3 looks like total crap compared to a simple .50 TCW D/G VVS1-VS2. That smaller stone is going to sparkle like crazy and the big stone is going to be incredibly dull.

So, if you are going to invest in a diamond, you're much better off getting a smaller stone with superb color/clarity instead of a big rock that has a yellowish tint or is milky/speckled with black inclusions.

i'm a shade under five feet, with very small hands, and one carat looked really big on my hands. even 3/4 carat looked really big. the only thing that looked good was something with some nice pave diamonds to accent the stone.

Your woman was "arranged". Not like she has much choice in the matter anyways.

People like to say size doesn't matter. People lie all the time too. ;)

Anything under a carat is tiny.
