How big is a 3/4 carat diamond?

Anything much over 1/2 carat is too big and looks fake/gaudy in my opinion. Plus, usually when people go much over that size, they buy ugly diamonds (visible flaws, very cloudy, and far from white color) just to get size. So you end up with a big diamond that pales in comparison to many cheaper diamonds.

I'd only go much over 1/2 carat if you are willing to fork over the money for a quality large diamond and if your fiance has big/pudgy fingers that need something substantial.

3/4 carat is probably a reasonable limit, it isn't too much over 1/2 carat. But just don't ever go for the 1 carat or larger diamonds. Also, due to binning and prices, you can often get a far cheaper diamond if it is just under a typical size. For example .72 carats (just under the 3/4 carat bin size) may be drastically cheaper than .75 carats and you'll never see the difference in size.

I got a 5/8'ths K diamond for a steal (and it was good quality) when I bought my wife's ring, this is very true. I think I paid maybie 5-8% over .5K size.

I have to respectfully disagree with you here. The engagement ring I bought my (now) wife was 1 carat, D color, VVS2, ideal cut, and it doesn't look huge nor does it look fake. I think anything up to about 1.5ct is fine (just pay attention to color and clarity here--Dullard is right). The table size (the widest part of the diamond - or is it waist? I forget) actually doesn't visibly change all that much until you get over 1.5ct or so (at least in my experience).

I'd definitely choose quality over quantity here--a .75ct D color VVS1 diamond looks much better IMO than a 1.5ct H color SI diamond.

I can afford a 3/4 carat with good quality... but my girlfriend is 5'1 and 95 lbs... is it going to be too big?

I think it'll look fine. As long as it doesn't look like a ring pop, I think she'll love it.

A lot of that comes down to setting, as well. If you choose a setting with pave or channel-set diamonds on the side, or larger side-stones, it can make the ring look larger and possibly a bit tacky on a slimmer finger. If this isn't an enormous surprise present, try taking your girlfriend to a jeweler and have her try on some rings to see how they look on her hand.

A 3/4 ct diamond won't look small on a normal sized girl's hand. My wife didn't want anything bigger than 3/4 ct, because she didn't want it to look gaudy. It's not all about the bling.

It should be fine. If she knows you're going to be giving it to her, it can't hurt to have her try a few on.

Edit: My wife is 5'6", ~125 lbs. Your girlfriend is just a slightly shrunken version of her, pretty much same thickness. Should be fine.

That will be just fine, I speak with experience.
 
You also have to factor in other diamonds such as baguettes and little fancy ones arranged to compliment the main diamond. There are a lot of nice designs out there right now where the main diamond is less than 1 carat but the total weight is somewhere between 1.25 and 1.5. They are beautiful, especially when combined with a princess cut IMHO.

Go for a nice ring that catches your eye - don't be too concerned about the size of the main rock. White gold is also a very nice alternative to platinum IMHO.
