How bad (content wise) is Grand Theft Auto 3?

I've played GTA 1 and 2, I didn't like GTA 1 because I thought the language was very rough,
Two was ok but I preferred the gameplay of 1.

I've never played GTA3 because I thought it was even rougher, although that was all based on media hype and hearsay.

I'm sure a lot of you have played it, how bad is it content wise? Is the language on par with GTA 2 or is it as rough as 1? What about other content is it comparable to GTA 2?

-Thx

There are remarks in this thread bordering on personal attacks. Let's keep the thread on topic, not on a debate on grammar and proper dialect. PC Gaming and Security Mod Oakenfold

I seem to recall a fair amount of swearing, not quite as bad as a Sopranos episode but much worse than your average video game.

Also plenty of fake looking blood whenever you kill somebody, and usually they lose a limb or two before death.

I only vaguely recall 1 and 2, but at the time I played 3, I seem to remember thinking it was much more intense, but also had better gameplay too.

I don't mind a little swearing, I've played the game Mafia (Great game!) their was a bit of language in that, but I thought it was classier than GTA 1 as far as the language went. In GTA 1 it felt like they just strung together swear word after swear word and it made no sense.

Well it's not so bad in GTA3, the quality of the writing is top-notch and swear words are never used for the sake of using them.

legoman what what was the point of that? There are times when swearing really ruins an experience. this can be true for any form of entertainment tv, movies, music, games, art, theater, anything. I dont remember GTA3 being that bad. but it has been a while since i have played it. My favorite GTA so far is Vice City. It doesnt seem to bad. maybe i will give it a quick play and pay more attention. sadly all the years of rap music, movies, and HBO shows have left me kinda numb to swearing. but there have been times i have turned things off because it was used in bad taste.

Then again you cant ask that question in AT and expect to get a straight answer except for 10% of the time. I definately think there was some class to the language in GTA3.

what i dont understand is why is it so wrong for someone to object to swear words? Isnt that a choice that you should be able to make with out hindering your ability to enjoy a form of entertainment? Just because we are adults doesnt mean that we have to listen to garbage all the time. yes we can "handle it" but does that mean we should have to? the comments by schizoid and legoman are prime examples ignorance and narrow mindedness. Just because you can say it doesnt mean you need to. I am all for free speech, but that doesnt meant that some one should be treated like you guys are treating him. He doesnt want to hear it big deal. its like you are taking that as some personal attack. like it is going to affect you in some way. well it isnt so stop being assholes and help the man make an informed decision. And yeah i think that was used tastefully.

Also i think what Prey did was a good option. One of the setting for the game was to turn profanity on or off. would it be so hard for more devs to do this. granted i kept it on but it is still a nice thought. and it makes the game more accessible to people who might not want that type of content. Maybe the industry could get some people off of its back if it offered toned down audio and gore with just the simple check of a box in its setting. I remember this used to be the case in several older games. Do we really need to just try and shock and disturb people all the time? i dont think so. sometimes people want to be able to enjoy and not be offended by it.

My sister played GTA3 without any issues. There are some adult situations, usually done in a comedic fashion, such as when you run a porn studio in GTA:SA. But it's pretty tame all things considered.

because they are arbitrary. Someone in the FCC could easily designate "hockey stick" to be a swear word. Would that magically make it offensive to you? No? Then why are the current "swear words" offensive to you?

They are just words.

I'm not making an attack against anyone or anything, otherwise I wouldn't even think twice about Gta 3, how many of you realize that I'm willing to give the game a chance?

I'm trying to check it out and as part of doing so I decided to ask other gamers about it, rather than listen to Jack Thompson (Or whatever his name is). I can "handle" bad language, it's just that I don't like it used in such a distastefull manner like in Gta 1.

It's not like I started this thread by saying, "Gta is a bad, awful and violent video game series and it should be banned"

I also agree with the checkbox idea, even though I always leave the language and gore on is beside the point. I always like to know what I'm getting into that's all.

Oh, wow, tell me something I don't already know

That is beside the point, I already have a perspective on that and alot of other worldly issues. We are not here to compare apples to oranges, it's not like I was here gripeing about gas prices.

As I previously stated, I am not on a crusade to ban violent video games, I just want to
know from other players what the game is like, is that too much to ask around here?

I get jumped on just for asking such a simple question?

"My sister played GTA3 without any issues. There are some adult situations, usually done in a comedic fashion, such as when you run a porn studio in GTA:SA. But it's pretty tame all things considered. "

Thank you for the comment skace. I also want to thank everyone else who posts comments that are TO THE POINT!

Agreed. They are just words and they are only offensive if you let them offend you. Rise above it all.

Maybe I've been desensitized, but I don't even hear swear words anymore, I just hear people talking.

To a lot of people excessive swearing makes dialog sound incredibly stupid, so its not like he can't take swearing, it just sounds stupid to him, wtf is there to "man up" about hes not crying about it.

GTA3 and its progeny are awesome games, so even if they uttered "c***" every other word, it'd still be worth playing. Take $5 and go get it. But I have no idea whether you can enjoy the GTA series if bad words ruin a game for you since you're going to be sniping headshots off grandmothers and hookers and cops as part of the game. The graphics are cartoonish, but chopping someone up with a sword doesn't require ultra realistic graphics. I'm changing my mind. The fact you asked this question means this isn't the series for you.

Aside from violence and mild langauge, both of which I have no issue with, there's the hooker in car thing. If anything, it's the hooker thing (thank you US media?) that makes GTA bad, everything else is pretty standard.

what was distasteful about the language in gta1? i've never played it so i have no frame of reference.

you might want to avoid scarface, then. it's a pretty good gta-style game, but it has more than it's fair share of frivolous profanity. of course, what else would you expect from tony montana? ;)

I saw the movie Scarface, it was amusing, I actually found it comical

I'd have to dig up some of the text examples of GTA maybe I'm wrong considering it's been so long, but I thought GTA 2 was alot "cleaner" lol. As far as 1 went I recall a lot of non-sensical cursing that just stood out alot in parts of the game.

The hooker thing is why I avoided GTA 3 in the first place, but then after reading about it recently I realized just what I read, that picking up hookers was optional and so was killing them. I thought to myself well duh? why didn't I realize that?

Then go read a book or watch a movie, leave mindless carjacking and killing to the rest of us.
