since IT is in Finance, the Accounting Clerk who prints them drops them off to us

There are only 12 states which allow mandated direct deposit, and even then people without bank accounts are exempt (unless the company sets up a no cost payroll access account for them). If the deposit, or accessing it, would cost the employee any money at all the company is required to offer cash or check options instead. Thank you FLSA.

There are tons of banks out there that will obviously provide a checking account for no charge (I suppose that an exception would be people that are known to be in violation by ChexSystems). /me ponders

No, I'm something of a civil rights nut with some minor background in law. However it's purely hobbyist in nature, and should not be construed as legal advice.

Most places that 'require' direct deposit either don't know the law, or are just fronting to bully people into not wondering about the law. Usually if you push them they will authorize you a payroll card or just cut you checks (sometimes with a processing fee if allowed in your state).

You can google the info in 5 minutes if you're bored. You're looking for FLSA compliance, Regulation E (Title 12 stuff), etc.

Obviously you have to be willing to sue...but that's true of every law and regulation out there. In my case, I refuse to use banks, so companies have to set up neutral payroll accounts, or cut me checks/cash. I've had to fight a few places over it, but it generally ends within a week and they fall in line with the law.

Why would you not want direct deposit? Unless you enjoy standing in line at the bank to get one of those cheap little suckers in a basket at the teller window.

I don't use banks, except to cash my paychecks or other checks given to me. I'd like to not use them at all, but so far I haven't found a legal loophole I can use to require paying me in cash, so I'm sort of stuck.

I don't EVER give control of my money to ANYONE but me. My cash stays under my direct control at all times. It's never electronic to be intercepted, stolen, misplaced, misentered, viewed, frozen, or anything else. I operate 100% cash only.

DD for most. For those not using DD (for whatever reason), paper checks are distributed in our department by our administrative assistant.

I guess you still have an option of getting a paper check but I don't know of anyone that does.
