How are paychecks distributed where you work?

There are about 400 people here and groups of paychecks are given to about 20 different people who distribute them to the employees. The 20 people who distribute them are an unusual mix - some are managers, some are secretaries, some are regular employees. Doesn't seem to be any system to who they are.

If someone isn't at work on payday, they put the check in the employee's top desk drawer.

When I started here I wondered why they just didn't hold onto them until the employee returned, but that's just not the way they do it. The checks are put in the desk.
 
This job, I'm on direct deposit so there's no physical copy. If we want a stub, we have to go get it from the intranet.

Last job, checks/stubs were distributed to department offices where people had a few days to pick them up. They were mailed after that window.
 
direct deposit and paper-mail stub. I used to get pay checks hand delievered. I have to say there is something very nice about it.

The bolded parts seem odd.
Since everyone apparently knows this policy, it'd be easy to steal someone's paycheck. There are always sleazy places that will cash it without ID...or people who will buy it at a significant discount...

In nearly 40 years of working, I've never seen such a thing. They've ALWAYS held the check until the employee's return.
 
i thought even smaller companies had switched to direct deposit
the only time in the last 23 years i got a paper check was for 2 months when i was working for a very small (about 30 employees) company in 1998
 
Direct deposit and we're asked to pick up our stubs. Sometimes, HR will hand them out or my manager will pick them up for our team. Otherwise, they'll get mailed.

Exact same process here and at the last place I worked. Since everyone is on direct deposit, there really isn't a need to hold them in a safe place.
 
In my company, the field staff cheques are given to their immediate foreman or superintendant, who hands them out at the end of the shift (we have had problems in the past with people dissappearing from the job site at noon if the cheques were handed out before the end of the shift).

In the office, the payroll clerk hands them out to the 20 office workers.

In both cases, if the person is away, the cheque is held in the office by either our VP Ops or the payroll clerk until they return.

We don't use direct deposit as in construction there is a reasonably large amount of turnover and setting up direct deposit would just be a huge PITA.
 
We are a company with less than 30 employees and we have automated direct deposit, automated leave request, benefits enrollment, etc etc etc.

It's all handled by your account that you can log into and manage YOURSELF.

But we also outsource our payroll. Even small businesses should offer direct deposit unless they have some kind of limited banking plan.

I'd request it of your employer.
 
I'm working for my dad for a few months before I go back to school, so every 2 weeks he tells my mom how much to deposit in my account.

I believe most are on DD.

The paystubs are the same as paychecks so no one can tell who is on DD/who gets the actual check. HR gives them to managers and they distribute them to employees. If someone isn't in or around they'll wait till the employee comes in. They're never just left in/on a desk.
 
I should have been more clear - even the people who are on direct deposit get a paycheck-like piece of paper. It's folded and sealed with the employee's name and address on it, and you could throw a stamp on it and mail it. You can't tell from looking whether it is a direct deposit or an actual paper check.

So we just call them all "paychecks" even though most people are only getting a statement of wages/deductions/etc.

With most people on direct deposit, there's no point to stealing the envelope. But I have been here even before direct deposit was offered, and there has never been a case of someone's check being stolen after being put in their desk.

I am surprised to hear how many people don't get any physical statement of wages/deductions but get them online. Where are they hosted? Would they still be available to you if you changed employers or if your employer changed to a different payroll service?
 
I've had them handed to me by supervisors/managers, had to go sign for them from payroll, had them mailed, and had them put into our mailboxes at work. It varies from job to job.

I tend to prefer places that keep central control of them until you personally sign for them.

I refuse direct deposit (obviously since I don't use banks)...you will give me cash, or at the very least a check.
