How are motorcycles legal?

The motorcycle lobby is pretty large and powerful. Texas put in a helmet law a few years ago. A couple of years later the motorcycle lobby was able to get the Texas legislature to reverse the law. Now, how many times do states get rid of laws? And what makes it even more amazing is that the Texas Legislature only meets for several months every two years, so their table is stacked. The lobby was able to get this pushed through in that short period of time.

You people have a reading comprehensive problem. I said, "I'm not advocating banning motorcycles". I was questioning why they've been skipped over in the government's quest to protect us from ourselves.

nowhere did i say that you wanted motorcycles illegal. i'm just pointing out there are other activities that are inherently dangerous that the government hasnt touched.

You are calling me a dumbass ? 😀
Notfred, I am going to relieve myself of this conversation, my statements went over everyones head 😉

I've always thought it was odd, too. Back in the 70s people thought convertibles would be done away with, but no one thought twice about motorcycles. It's just weird. I haven't ever heard a good reasoning.

A high percentage of heroin overdoses are the user's fault, but it's still illegal.

Part of the reason heroin and other drugs are illegal are the heath dangers, but another major part is the crime that is involved with drug distribution. Not really a good comparison to motorcycles as I believe they are manufactured legally.

That's circular reasoning. There would be no crime in distributing a legal drug. Similarly, if motorcycles were banned, building and selling them would also be a crime.

Sort of, but who do you think would make cheaper drugs? Drug lords or companies like Pfizer. Addicts would still go to the cheapest source. Last I checked, motorcycles weren't addictive (cept for all you adrenalin junkies)

They practically are. They're banned in restaurants, public buildings, they're restricted to those over 18 years of age, they're taxed extremely heavily, etc.

In a sense, motorcycles are restricted also, you have to be a certain age, take a test to get your license to "legally" drive one, pay insurance and so forth, like you would for a car.

I have my motorcycle license and have owned motorcycles in the past, the are easier to injure yourself on than a car without a doubt in my mind, but any and every time I did wreck or hurt myself on mine it was completely my own fault and usually from me just screwing around.

Your post is the one that's total bull crap. Yes, you can ride a motorcycle in a safe manner, just like you can drive a car in a safe manner. More people (as a percentage) still die on a motorcycle, like my post says. My post makes no claims about the training or ability of those people that are dying.

Per mile traveled in 1998, a motorcyclist is approximately 16 times more likely to die in a crash than an automobile occupant. And 3x (times) as likely to be injured.
from this page.

Most bike accidents are caused by human error. Anyone see some stupid kid go flying past you on the hIghway like you are standing still, or my personal favorite when they are hanging off the back of thier bikes. Then they crash and complain bikes are bad.
I been riding bikes since I was 10 years old and havent been in one accident (had to give i tup at 32 because of back injury). Been many close calls only because stupid people driving their cars didnt bother to look before pulling out or making lane changes. But as long as you ride safe and always on the defesive knowing that every car out there doesnt see you and you plan ahead for it they are very safe, cheap on gas, and if you dont buy a rocket have very low insurance.

If anything they need to get rid of the crotch rockets and stop putting out movies with idiots doing stupid stuff on public streets.

Go here and click on road bikes. 56k warning.

Yeah, it the motorcycles killing people. My bike has tried to murder me on numerous occasions. I now have a restraining order against all Kawasakis. They must be stopped! 😉

* There were 59 deaths per 100,000 registered motorcycles in 2002 compared with 16 deaths per 100,000 in cars.

* Twenty-four percent of all fatally injured motorcycle drivers in 2002 didn't have valid licenses to operate their motorcycles.

* Forty-six percent of motorcycle deaths in 2002 occurred in single-vehicle crashes, and 54 percent occurred in multiple-vehicle crashes.

* Forty-four percent of deaths in single-vehicle motorcycle crashes in 2002 involved drivers with blood alcohol concentrations at or above 0.08 percent.

Doesn't sound as though motorcycles are much more dangerous provided you're licensed and not drunk.

Why isn't alcohol banned? Why arn't a million things banned?

Because we don't need a the govt. to look over us.

PER MILE a motorcyclist is 16x more likely to die in a crash than someone driving a car.

Sixteen times as many fatalities occur per mile on motorcycles than in cars.

If there were 1 fatal accident for evry 1000 miles driven in a car, then there would be 16 fatal accidents per 1000 miles ridden on a motorcycle.

Do you understand the statistic yet?

hey just becasue you like cruisers dont make them any safer than us on Sportbikes..
I dont want to ride a chopper and drink beer with the rest of the chopper retards..
so before you go advocating the removal of any type of vehicle you better check your self..

There is nothing wrong with sportbikes..
the problem is any idiot can buy one and 99% of the time they dont require a BIKE license to purchase one...

the Problem is US Law is too leniant on bike laws.. we need CC restriction based on licesne status..
only the most senior riders should have access to 1000s..

BTW here in Houston the Cruisers are a bigger problem.. as 99% of the time they are all parked at Ice Houses and Bars getting drunk then going riding...
any given weekend you can cruise past the bars here and see hundreds of Cruisers parked and they are boozing it up indoors...
where the Sportbikers are out carving corners sober...

OH so now people who ride a crusier are boozers? And where are you getting yur information at. There are laws restricting the CC's needed to buy and ride a motorcycle. Sure you can go buy a mini crotch rocket and not need a permit but anything over 100cc and you need one. My point was maily focused to people who have no clue how to ride and watch thoes damn dvd's showing some guy doing a stopie, or hanging on the side of there bikes go right out there on the public roads and kill themseves because of what they watched. If anything there should be a law and a school required before anyone can get a license for a motorcycle.

Never said I hated crotch rockets btw. Just when this is hapening, kids see it, and then kill themselves trying to duplicate it without proper bike skilz.
