They should be less than 10%. I'd say some 7% or maybe even a bit less.

My brother in law, returning from California: "They put sugar in everything". All the classic european foods (with no sugar) became americanized adding sugar. Is this very common in the USA?

go read fatland, decent book on this. college campuses are already a self selected group of relatively well off kids. not to mention the weight gain starts to really hit after the mid 20's anyways.

well off people have the money to buy healthcare/trainers/gym equip/nutritionists/health foods etc.

It is true that eating healthy is more expensive than not, though.

Fruits and vegetables are expensive compared to 50 cent pot pies and cans of chili...

indeed, go to a more public place like wal-mart or a mall. in my area I would say like 60-70% of the people around here are over 40lbs. overweight or more for thier hight/bone structure

I love unsweetened tea, but I hate dark chocolate with a passion.

I wouldn't consider them comparable.

Just take a look at any college campus. Like about 1 out of 30 is fat. Those numbers seem fine to me.
And American babes can compete globally with the best of em!
I know that at my HS, it is a pretty good ration..maybe..1 in 20, if that, is overweight. I think the obesity problem gets worse and worse the lower you go economically and socially..maybe I wrong.
You're right. The problem is definately linked with social/economical reasons. I know that a lot of the child obesity solves itself in high school or college. I know that myself and many of my friends were definately fat/obese in junior high, but by our senior year in high school, we were all thin. Now that I have been out of school for 4 years, I noticed that a lot of people have ballooned up again... (depressed that their life sucks or something) :D

Hmm someone needs to do research on this. Are poor people fatter because in general they are lazier, and lazy people don't get jobs, sit on the couch all day, and hence are fat?

Or are they fatter because of the low quality food they eat?

Look at it this way, when you go into a grocery store, ground beef is 1.79/lb. A filet migon will cost you upwards of $5/lb. Fish is also far more expensive.

Are you going to pay $30 to make a healthy meal, or $5.99 for a quarter pounder, with fries and a coke? Or $0.12 for a pack of ramen noodles.

Grocery stores also tend not to locate in poorer areas, whereas fast-food establishments and convienience stores do. Fresh fruits and vegetables will cost you an arm and a leg compared to a gigantic 0.99 bag of potato chips.

A large number of overweight individuals simply cannot afford to eat healthy.

It's not really cheaper to get fast food.

Next time you're in a McDonalds, check ou this thing called a "dollar menu". The perception is that it's cheaper. If Fat people aren't taking the time to count calories, they're certainly not adding up the cost of fast food compared to bulk groceries.

You can't base observations on a college campus or high school because quite frankly those are the healthiest years of your life.

As others have said...go to a public place with a wide range of age/economics. wallmart is a perfect example of cattle in stretch pants pushing thru the aisles.

I've also come to the conclusion that a lot of people think it's someone else's fault that they are fat. I've worked in an office environment with hundreds of people for the past few years. I'm one of the few people who actually works out on a regular basis and who pays attention to what I eat.

The place where I workout is right next to the office so you can see who goes to work out before/after work and who goes straight home. I get the weirdest looks from people sometimes that could only mean : A) Why are you going over there? You don't look like you need to workout! B) Punk thinks he's better than me because he works out!

I just feel like we're becoming a blame society and obesity/overweight problems are just a component.

Check out the jump in obesity rate once you hit the 30-39 age bracket.

All the fat people on campus are in their dorm rooms. Come to my town sometime and spend one day in a grocery store. Sweet jesus will you change your tune.

Go to Europe. I saw more fat people in 15 minutes at the Philadelphia airport than in 10 days wandering around Rome.

hmm thank you for that link...i guess that explains it. Confirms everything in this thread. Less educated (and hence poorer) people are generally fatter. And good god, those numbers are for "obese" not just just fat.

But wtf happened between 1991 and 2001? The obesity numbers doubled, but fast food and junk food was around before 1991.

Think about the explosion in computers, TV programming, and all the other stuff that keeps people behind a desk or on the couch all day since then as well. Fast food's been around forever, but people are getting more and more sedentary so it's catching up with them.

It's much easier to get fat than to stay slim. Healthy foods tend to be more expensive and gym memberships aren't cheap. In America, it is VERY EASY to get fat .. and it doesn't cost much. Just think about the $1 menu at McDonalds. You can eat that every meal for only $3/day.

Fast food has not been around forever in all parts of the country. Think about it man. The people turning 30-39 in 1991 would have been born between 1952 - 1961. I guarantee you that every town didn't have 40,000 McDonald's, 20,000 Burger Kings, was there even a Taco Bell yet? :p

Any idea why smokers aren't as obese as non-smokers?

A quick google search said that it might speed up metabolism and suppress appetite? Don't know how true that is though.
