americans are massive. but at least they have the ability to be massive. some people in other countries would dream of the ability to become fat.

spend one week in any foreign country and you'll see why they call us fat. you will be amazed at how in shape they are and how much better they all look. then you come back to the states and you're greeted by mountains of flab. the other thing you notice is how loud and obnoxious americans are. just getting back on the plane (coming home from scotland) i felt like standing up and shouting "american people, please shut up."

Word is that other countries are slowly getting fatter too. I have zero overweight friends and family, and that wont change. Its amazing that of the 100s? of friends I've had over the years, and zero were even overweight, let alone fat. I simply dont like big people. I'm sorry if it offends, but you probably already know it.
Actually, throughout the vast majority of history wealthy people have been fat while the working classes have been skinny. It has only been in the last 50-60 years that things have swung the other way.Originally posted by: RussianSoldier
Poor people are most often fatter than wealthier individuals... and America's society promotes it...

Fillet Mignon is not any healthier than ground beef. I can eat for a week on $30 worth of food and eat healthily. You're an idiot if you think that it costs $30 to make a single healthy meal.Originally posted by: RussianSoldier
Look at it this way, when you go into a grocery store, ground beef is 1.79/lb. A filet migon will cost you upwards of $5/lb. Fish is also far more expensive.
Are you going to pay $30 to make a healthy meal, or $5.99 for a quarter pounder, with fries and a coke? Or $0.12 for a pack of ramen noodles.
Grocery stores also tend not to locate in poorer areas, whereas fast-food establishments and convienience stores do. Fresh fruits and vegetables will cost you an arm and a leg compared to a gigantic 0.99 bag of potato chips.
A large number of overweight individuals simply cannot afford to eat healthy.

How does American society promote it?

Hmm someone needs to do research on this. Are poor people fatter because in general they are lazier, and lazy people don't get jobs, sit on the couch all day, and hence are fat?
Or are they fatter because of the low quality food they eat?

It could be due to the fact that the 18-22 age bracket is like 10% of the total population and not at all representative of the overall fatassedness of this country.

I would say that America does definately have an obesity problem. I have noticed that any time I go down to America, I do notice a signifficantly greater ratio of fat:not fat people. My country, Canada, is slowly catching up in the obesity which is quite unfortunate.
