Why does everyone say Americans are fat? Sure the 50 yr olds are fat, but there are still many good looking young people out there!

Just take a look at any college campus. Like about 1 out of 30 is fat. Those numbers seem fine to me.

And American babes can compete globally with the best of em!

I know that at my HS, it is a pretty good ration..maybe..1 in 20, if that, is overweight. I think the obesity problem gets worse and worse the lower you go economically and socially..maybe I wrong.

We had a converstaion about this at work the other day. People were saying "I'm 1/2 german that's why I am Ripped and the other half is.... Blah Blah Blah"

My response was "I am 100% American... I'm Fat, Want it NOW, and am ready to sue your ass at any given moment!"

Just something that came up. I am overweight, but not horribly.

well the problem is that america is home of the extremes. while we do house some of the finest women in the world, when you see a fat person, they're not fat - they're fvcking enormous. while other countries do have their share of overweight individuals, you won't see nearly as many 3-400 pounders.

OP needs to go the mall or better yet, Walmart... I don't think the ratio there will be 1 out of 30...

That's because they are too fat to walk from north campus to south campus in an univeristy.

It could be due to the fact that the 18-22 age bracket is like 10% of the total population and not at all representative of the overall fatassedness of this country.

Hmm someone needs to do research on this. Are poor people fatter because in general they are lazier, and lazy people don't get jobs, sit on the couch all day, and hence are fat?

Or are they fatter because of the low quality food they eat?

I would say that America does definately have an obesity problem. I have noticed that any time I go down to America, I do notice a signifficantly greater ratio of fat:not fat people. My country, Canada, is slowly catching up in the obesity which is quite unfortunate.

Look at it this way, when you go into a grocery store, ground beef is 1.79/lb. A filet migon will cost you upwards of $5/lb. Fish is also far more expensive.

Are you going to pay $30 to make a healthy meal, or $5.99 for a quarter pounder, with fries and a coke? Or $0.12 for a pack of ramen noodles.

Grocery stores also tend not to locate in poorer areas, whereas fast-food establishments and convienience stores do. Fresh fruits and vegetables will cost you an arm and a leg compared to a gigantic 0.99 bag of potato chips.

A large number of overweight individuals simply cannot afford to eat healthy.

People who think Americans aren't fat should hop on a plane and visit the rest of the world... and I'm not talking about sub-Saharan Africa.

It's not really cheaper to get fast food. The average price of one of the bigger sandwiches at a McDonald's is $3.00 or so. A bag of boneless, skinless chicken breasts at Sam's Club is roughly $14.99 for six pounds. You can make a lot of sandwiches out of a bag's worth, and they taste a Hell of a lot better, not to mention being better for you. I think it boils down to whether or not a person is willing to take the time and make the effort to eat better.

That's just the most basic idea. I know a lot of dishes that could be made with that chicken, some rice, and a couple of other inexpensive ingredients that would last a person for several meals, and be better for you.
