How addicting is heroin?

I just read a story about a guy who completed a drug rehab program, got out of prison and then went straight to a drug dealer, purchased heroin and overdosed.

It must either feel that damn good or his body must have really needed it.

I think heroin is supposedly one of the worst addictions out there. Withdraw can kill and stuff.

I believe a textbook I once had referred to a case study in which an addict described the experience as: "Imagine that every single cell in your body is a tongue, and that every one of those tongues is licking honey"

The room is spinning .. naked girls ... im flying ...
Never done it, but I saw a documentary where homeless kids in Chicago loved doing that stuff and would spend all day begging for money just so they could buy some.

It's pretty addictive. I dont think its the withdrawl symptoms, but just the thought of how good it feels makes people go into relapse

I really don't know, and never intend to find out. I've heard it described many ways though. The best one I've heard is, "it makes you feel like you're dead." Not in the, "you got killed," sense, but in the, "nothing matters, and I'm more calm and comfortable than I've ever been before," sense.

As far as addiction, I know it's hardcore, but let me give you some interesting info. Someone once told me, and they know firsthand, that it was harder to quit smoking cigarettes than it was to quit shooting heroin.

how old were they?

some addiction are just weird trying to understand them

17 year old heroin users that have been using it for a year can just up and not do it any more with nothing other then a mental addiction(not physical addiction which is far worse). because there bodys are developing and changning so much some people can just not be addicted.

but yes, dr.drew was talking about how some kids on heroin can be perfectly fine with not doing it any more after abusing the substance for years.

Heroin is highly addictive, and even after withdrawing and rehab, it's all too easy to restart.

Even after life-threatening illnesses caused by heroin injection it's all too common for people to be unable to resist the temptation.

For example. A local hospital recently audited their cardiac surgery results - they had had several heroin addicts who needed emergency open heart surgery for infected heart valves. None of those people left hospital - they all died on the ward from heroin overdoses.

Heroin has very unpleasant withdrawral (although this is not the primary mechanism of addiction), but despite its great unplesantness it is not very harmful. It is quite possible to go 'cold turkey' withdrawral on heroin.

On the otherhand withdrawral from alcohol or benzodiazepines (sleeping tablets e.g. xanax, valium) are highly dangerous and can be fatal.

I have never heard of severe alcohol withdrawls (physical), espcially to levels where it would endanger ones health.

Do you have any links to information on that? I'm interested.

Here you go.

I can assure you that severe alcohol withdrawral is not an uncommon condition, but is easily treated in hospital. I have also seen cases so severe, that they have needed admission to the intensive care ward.

Like all drugs it is very psychologically addictive, but the zinger is that it is one of the few physically addictive substances.

Your body stops producing endorphins(your own natural pain killers) so when you stop doing it you feel all the pains that your body naturally suppresses.

I've been there, it's not fun. Imagine the worst body aches from the worst flew you ever had and double it.

Never done heroin but when I was younger and stupid I tried coke once. Yep, only once...not because it was bad but because it was so good. It scared me it was so good...I can defiantly see why people become coke heads.

Here in canada we have pics on our cigarettes with blackened lungs etc etc. All the bad stuff about smoking.

Anyways, one of the little blurbs said that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and cocaine.
I guess you can shake the latter two. But there are people who are out there who crave nicotine even 20 years after quitting

NOT Nicotine, but cigs are. Its all the crap that the cig companies add that make it like that.

Hence ONE of the reason I don;t want ANY other drugs to be made legal. Think what someone could do with just weed if they were able to make Cigs so bad.

What the hell are you talking about? Nicotine is why cigarettes are addictive, the cigarette companies just add a lot more nicotine than is naturaly found in the tobacco plant.
