Here's a cure for gun violence in Toronto!

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO; HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA
COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for
them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights
Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city
projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for
discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order
that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked! up the cable TV again only
let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot
it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton If
you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the
jails.

More on the Arizona Sheriff:

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just
set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living
in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have
been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer
shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their
bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week
before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their
chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has
lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago
started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not
one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's
120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have
to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your
damned mouths!"

Way to go, Sheriff! Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a
lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for
their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to
go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers
money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Some of this is slightly inaccurate. The meals cost less then 20 cents for example ... LOL!
This may be a re-post , but it should be posted everyday.

I must admit putting a 66year old woman in the tent city because she made a mistake on her taxes and couldn't afford the 500.00 bail for the 9 months until her court case came up was very heroic of the sheriff. I guess it would have even been more heroic if the case wasn't thrown out because it was the WRONG woman. I know that poor 66 year old woman will never even think of breaking the law, not that she ever did, after spending 9 months in that h*llhole.

So there was 1 innocent person among the 999 guilty?

Assuming you're right that she "couldn't" afford $500 and had no sons, daughters, grandchildren, or other family that could pay it for her.

Here are some of his less-than-stellar achievements :Q

# 1996: Sheriff Joe personally deputizes con man David Pecard. It soon appears that something is amiss when the new deputy promises to shorten a female inmate's sentence then fondles her in an empty office. Pecard is charged on 12 felony counts and faces a court-martial for deserting the United States army seven times under different identities.

# 1997: U.S. Justice Department sues Sheriff Joe alleging excessive use of force by guards. The sheriff settles the suit by promising to stop hog-tying inmates.

# 2001: Following the 9-11 terrorist attack, Sheriff Joe orders American flags painted in 2,000 cells. As of July, 2002, 151 inmates had been punished for defacing them.

# 2001 - December 15: Sheriff Joe bobble head dolls go on sale, just in time for the Christmas rush.

# 2004 - July 1 to 11: Country singer and longtime Phoenix resident Glenn Campbell serves 10 days in Sheriff Joe's jail...sort of. Campbell received national attention when he was arrested for DUI on November 24, 2003 after causing a minor traffic accident and leaving the scene. He had a 0.20 blood-alcohol level when he was arrested, far above Arizona's legal limit of 0.08. The Phoenix New Times reported that rather than placing Campbell behind bars or in tent city, Sheriff Joe put him up in the Mesa Hilton for the period of his sentence. Before his release, Campbell gave a free 30 minute concert for about 1,000 inmates at Joe's tent city jail.

# 2004 - July: Maricopa County prosecutors announce that they will not prosecute 60 suspected prostitutes and their tricks arrested by some 400 sheriff's deputies in a 2 month sting operation in late 2003. The problem with the arrests was that the undercover deputies removed their clothing and engage in sex acts on videotape. An expert on the subject of prostitution arrests explained that if the officers that go that far to get the arrest, they have engaged in prostitution and have themselves committed a crime. TV stations could not wait to get the videos on the evening news.
On a happier occasion Sheriff Joe's SWAT tank escorted Diamondback players in the parade celebrating their 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees. 11-01

# 2004 - July 23: In executing a misdemeanor arrest warrant on 26 year old Eric Kush for failure to appear in Tempe Traffic Court, Sheriff Arpaio's SWAT team burned down a $250,000 home and crushed a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage with their SWAT tank. The Sheriff's SWAT team interrupted a quiet summer morning in the gated Fairway Hills community in the Ahwatukee Foothills when they surrounded the rented house in the 16800 block of South Cyan Court which Kush shared with three other residents. The Sheriff's arsenal included a SWAT tank which prior to that occasion had received its heaviest use promoting the department in valley parades. Shortly after noon, the SWAT team entered the home and escorted a young woman and a child from the property, but Kush barricaded himself on the second floor. Deputies launched gas canisters filling the home with a white gas, but Kush remained in hiding. As the white gas turned to black smoke deputies discovered that the second floor was on fire. They warned Kush who then surrendered as the home was engulfed in flames. Fearing that their armed SWAT tank might become a casualty of the fire, deputies moved the vehicle to safety, parking it on an incline. Unfortunately, the tank's electric brakes disengaged when the engine was turned off allowing it to roll into and almost over the much smaller Mitsubishi Mirage. The Mirage was crushed. The $250,000 home was declared a total loss. Kush posted a $1,000 bond and was released from jail the next day.

That seems fairly stupid. Sure, it makes us feel all tough on crime and what not, but on the list of reasons people commit crimes, is "nice jails" really a big concern? I'd be interested in finding out how the conditions in jail affect criminal behavior. My guess is, not very much. Most people don't commit crimes thinking they are going to jail, they think they are going to get away with it.

True, but it probably cuts down on second offenses...and I'm willing to bet at least half of crime is committed by repeat offenders.

Scott Norberg died of asphyxia in Madison Street Jail on 1 June 1996, after being tackled by 14 detention officers and placed in a restraint chair with a towel over his face.

Several of the above cases alleged the abusive use of stun guns, including repeated shocks to inmates, the use or threatened use of a stun gun on a prisoner already restrained, or inappropriate use such as to arouse an inmate from sleep. Concern about the use of stun guns was also cited in the Justice Department report of March 1996

The Tents are situated in the desert and become intensely hot during the summer months. The single fans which were situated in each tent on the day Amnesty International's delegates visited were totally inadequate. There are some 25 inmates to a tent, sleeping in double bunks and there was very little space between the top bunk and the top of the tent, allowing little air to circulate. Amnesty International's delegates were told that prisoners have to breath in dust from the desert which frequently sweeps through the tents area, and by sources outside the jail that there was a problem with sanitation and with vermin and rodents, although this was denied by the guards the delegates spoke with. However, it is clear that the tents provide serious environmental hazards which make them unsuitable for inmate housing.

etc. (Link)

Add the prison rape problem to this. Prisoners have no rights in the USA. This report sounds like it was from Guantanamo to me. "Good job" Mr. Arpaio

It's true, a lot of crimes are committed by repeat offenders, but again, I'm not sure this is helping. Well, I take that back, it will help against an intelligent criminal who weights the benefits and risks before committing a crime. I'm just not convinced there are that many intelligent criminals.

The intelligent ones appear to not be moving to Maricopa county. Or if they do, they make sure to join
the Sherrif's office once they get there.

A prison shouldn't be measured by how much it punishes criminals, it should be measured by how many of its prisoners come back. So there should only be praise for Sheriff Joe if it is shown his measures really do cut down on repeat offenders more than the avg prison. You have any info on that?

Of course he keeps getting elected. Most people don't believe in freedoms or rights or anything of the sort, and think that veangence is an effective crime deterant (the honest ones admit they just like seeing people suffer if they can feel justified).

That jail (it ain't no prison) is a complete joke. The alcoholic sheriff who runs the place is right out of Barnum & Baily. Nothing he does reduces crime. Nothing he does reduces recidivism. Nothing he does reduces gang violence. Nothing he does reduces drug sales & addiction. His entire County is a haven for illegal aliens and drug runners. He's nothing more than a loud, obnoxious dog & pony show.

He's become a millionaire with his pompous me-me-me style of self-promotion.

Edit: I almost forgot; the biggest X & meth dealer in the last 10 years, operated out of Maricopa County for years. He retired to Marin County a few years ago and he laughs himself sick everytime they show that drunk sheriff on TV.

When someone who was arrested for a nothing crime (like possession of marijuana which shouldn't be a crime at all) dies of heat exhaustion, it will result in a large lawsuit and perhaps charges of negligent homicide and possibly manslaughter.
