The gf and I watched that Sat. night, very good movie. I found it hard to believe it was based on a true story. We really live in a messed up world...

The funny thing is, I heard nothing about it while it was in theatres (was it even in theatres?)

paints an accurate picture of the UN...

What I didn't understand is why the UN troops left. Is it not their job to stay and fight?

The UN talks, but doesn't act...unless you have money of course. Nolte said it right in the movie

I actually caught Hotel Rwanda in the theaters-had to go to an art house, and it only lasted a short time, but it was well worth it. I'm glad it's catching on in the DVD market, it's an important film and well done.

Things I liked about it:
-it very effectively conveyed the brutality and killings while only showing very minimal gore-far less than you see on network TV shows.
-it protrayed Africa as a real place, with very modern parts of the city and middle class neighborhoods, as well as the poor areas.
-As mentioned above, the problems and issues facing the UN troops came across well.
-The scene where his wife and kids are escaping to the airport is one of the most authenticating terrifying scenes I've seen in a movie in my opinion.
-Nearly all of the characters have some good and bad in them. The second time I saw this movie I really enjoyed the nuances of the Rwandan general character, for example.

On the other hand, I didn't really care for Sometimes in April. Too preachy with soap opera elements to the storyline.

It's on Pay Per View this month. The wife wants to check it out but, every time the opportunity arises I opt for something less disturbing. The buz around this movie is that it's very well produced, directed, acted, written. I just haven't been in the mood to get that disturbed by having this tragedy in my face.

I'll probably check it out eventually.

I remember somewhere it was mentioned that the US and other countries successfully lobbied for the UN to pull out.
