I actually caught Hotel Rwanda in the theaters-had to go to an art house, and it only lasted a short time, but it was well worth it. I'm glad it's catching on in the DVD market, it's an important film and well done.
Things I liked about it:
-it very effectively conveyed the brutality and killings while only showing very minimal gore-far less than you see on network TV shows.
-it protrayed Africa as a real place, with very modern parts of the city and middle class neighborhoods, as well as the poor areas.
-As mentioned above, the problems and issues facing the UN troops came across well.
-The scene where his wife and kids are escaping to the airport is one of the most authenticating terrifying scenes I've seen in a movie in my opinion.
-Nearly all of the characters have some good and bad in them. The second time I saw this movie I really enjoyed the nuances of the Rwandan general character, for example.
On the other hand, I didn't really care for Sometimes in April. Too preachy with soap opera elements to the storyline.
