Alright I called back a little while ago and spoke to a different CSR.
This time I had no problems. She knew exactly what I was talking about. Probably took about 5 minutes total.
Amazing the difference between CSRs...
Anyway I can connect now. But I seem to be having the same problem "xDeLiRiOuSx" was having back on page 2 of not being able to connect any faster than 19200... So who knows. Better than nothing I guess. But @ 19200 it's not much faster than QNC.

Do you mean a wireless card or a wired LAN card? Wireless PCMCIA cards can be found for dirt cheap; even Compact Flash ones can be as low as $30-$40 these days (mobileplanet has a d-link CF 802.11b card for $40 AMIR). A wired LAN card for a PDA is probably not worth it... when you can get a wifi AP and wifi card for $70 or $80, easily.

However, you can get a wired 10/100 PCMCIA card for around $30 on amazon.com (the one from Hawking, for example) - look around.

Assuming you do have the iPaq with pcmcia sleeve (the only pda i know of with pcmcia, anyways)... you may want to just get a CF card instead and leave the big fat sleeve at home.

After user "xDeLiRiOuSx" giving me a little bit of guidance everything is working perfectly... (Well I can't hold a connection that long but I can only assume that has to do with my cell phone and/or service)
Anyway. I consistently get speeds slightly faster than 56k. I won't be using this service that much. But it will certainly be useful when I travel.
Thanks for this great thread.

Ok all, looking for some wisdom. My company currently uses Alltel, but I have a personal Verizon phone. We want to start using SMS messaging by forwarding to email addresses. After finding out that this wasn't possible using Alltel, I pitched a switch to Verizon and demonstrated how text messaging works. I then started talking about 3G and Express Network and I think they are sold on Verizon. We are going to get an account and try it out, however, I can't decide which phone to go with. We don't want a lot of out of pocket expense in case reception is bad in certain key locations, but the phone definitely needs to be EN capable and good enough to help me convince them to swtich to Verizon. I'd also like to be able to inexpensively purchase a data cable for the phone. I thought the Audiovox/Toshiba CDM-9500 looks great for the price, but I can't seem to find a data cable for it anywhere. Any suggestions on phones etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The LG VX4400 is your best bet.

Definantly! Plus you can pick up the data cable at Radioshack for $20.

I have both the port speed in Windows and the data rate on my phone set to 115,200, but my dial-up connection shows "19200" as the speed it is connected at in my task bar. However, I am connected at the higher speed, based on my running a speed test which results in a 110k/sec transfer rate.

I'm in the same boat as ph34rful, just above 56k rates. I know my phone set up is set to 115,200 but I'll check the Windows port speed when I get home. Would this be a reason for getting slower speeds?

I thought it's supposed to be just a tad faster than 56k, that's what it is supposed to be!

Ph34rful, Glad everything worked for you.

You said you can't hold a steady connection? Maybe you're phone is just in "dormant" mode?

Well 110k/s (i'm assuming this is kbps) is still more than double 56k speeds. I think Krusty is using EN, which is what I'm using(username=myphonenumber@vzw3g.com, password=vzw, init string, etc...) so I wondering my my speeds aren't that high. Out of interest, what are normal speeds for QNC?

Do not go with verizon. I just got out of my contract with them and ran the opposite direction. I had dropped calls, extra charges on my bill, crappy phone service (along with crappy customer service), and everyone that I know feels the same way. Stay away!!!

just my advice though :)

Comparable to a 14.4 modem.

The v60i isn't a 1XRTT/Express Network compatible phone.

Well I got confused on this whole matching up Modem port speed to Windows port speed. From previously in this thread, KrustyVT said that this simply means setting "Maximum Port Speed" found in Modem Properties to 115,200. Well mine was already at that but i'm not getting anywhere near 110 kbps.

I would say mine ranges between 1 kb/s and 3 kb/s, sometimes going as high up as 5 or 6.

Krusty, I have the same stuff as you (T720, charging data cable from eforcity, Windows XP) and I think I'm doing everything correctly. My signal is pretty strong where I live. Any ideas as to why it's not as fast?

Oh well if it's not. It's still free internet on nights and weekends can I can't beat that.

This is for those of you who got the lg vx3100 and have no clue how to get the data setup working.

My first post in a while (and hopefully a good one) - After some trial and error trying to figure out exactly how to configure my phone and which cables will work with the lg vx3100 I finally got it to work.

1) I bought the futuredial cable from radio shack for the lg vx1, vx10, vx2000, etc., which has the Prolific 2303 serial->usb chip.
2) I downloaded the drivers from FurtureDial (the usb driver package, not the manual drivers)
3) Installed the drivers
4) When prompted to plug in the phone, first did this:
- turned off phone
- plugged in cable to phone
- turned on phone
- set data mode on phone to "Data in always"
- set data speed to 115,200
- then plugged the cable into my usb hub
5) The cable was detected and installed on winxp without the need for me to reboot or do anything
6) Added a new modem via the "modems and phone options" via the control panel
- selected to add a 19,200 bps standard modem
- selected the com port for the modem that the prolific cable driver was on (Com 5 for me. seems best to keep it above com1-4)
- also disabled hardware flow control on the prolific com port in the device manager
- made sure hardware flow control was disabled for the modem
- set the modem speed to 115,200 bps
- finished the setup
7) Added a new dial network connection through the network connection manager
- follow the wizard - make sure to set connection as "dial-up"
- select the new modem that you just created as the modem used to make this connection
- in the connection configuration for the modem make sure to disable hardware flow control (even though you've already done it 2 other places)
- have it set to dial "#777"
- username: "your_10_digit_phone_number@vzw3g.com"
- password: "vzw"
- make sure that your phone is flipped open - I made the mistake of having it closed when I first tried to do this and it always gave me the error 628 "disconnected" because the phone could never start to dial
- when you hit "connect" it should work

I know I didn't find anything specific to the vx3100 on any forum that I searched on, so I thought this might be helpful because this is a very new phone and there is no official support from FutureDial or any company like that. Verizon doesn't even sell a data package in the group of accessories for this phone. I thought this cable might be compatable because LG has it for sale on their site for $43 just for the cable and driver. Seems like the $20 radio shack route is a lot better.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

thanks for the great info swishsween! looks like verizon raised prices on the cell phones already.

if im not mistaken, the vx4400 was $99-$50 rebate=$49.99, but now it's $149.99-$50 rebate=$99.99

on another note, how is the built in browser on the vx3100 and the screen when viewing web pages?

The LG VX6000 was just released, so they jack the prices of the comparable cheaper color phones to close the price gap between them. Same thing happened to the Motorola T720 when the LG VX4400 was released.

A shot in the dark - where are you located? The Express Network is not available everywhere - since your account is provisioned with the EN feature you will be able to logon using your number@vzw3g.com credentials, but you will be placed on the QNC network.

Give this a try - connect to the network, lookup the IP address you are assigned and post it here.

Man, am I glad I got in on this deal over this weekend cause I bought 3 phones. Glad I didn't wait like I was planning to and it saved me $150. These are great little phones. Does anyone know if I'll be charged for using the builtin web browsing feature of this phone? It gives me a message when I try to access the browser stating that there will be a charge, or does it just use the included minutes?

Pakman, you will definitely be charged for the usage if you use the built in browser in the phone. Mobile Web, which the phone uses, is a different service from the Express Network Service. I wish I could simply use my minutes for Mobile Web.

Thanks Swish Sween for the step by step. I had to go through 3 CE's before I got one that was willing to set me up with the EN, but I finally got it setup this morning. I'll be testing it out this evening. I hope it works, I'll be able to bring my laptop with me camping this weekend :D
