I don't remember anyone saying they took the spreader off to look at the chips. Super Talent is made by MAlabs which makes their own memory chips according to their website.

Who wants to be brave and remove their heat spreader?

Keep eye on ebay for seller imicros, thats ewiz and sometimes they'll have same prices as on their webpage and yes they'll also take paypal on ebay items.

I just bought 2, total for 2 was 69.02 + 8.53 Shipping.

Now to start buying the rest of the components to build my 1st Dual-Core System. I'll stay the Cheap$ route, ala some sort of AM2 MB/CPU combination, and soon as the 8800GT-512MB prices drop I'll buy one of those also.

So now that I have 4GB of memory not sure if I should build this Dual-Core PC with 32-Bit Vista or 64-Bit, decisions, decisions :( lol

yeah, I just ordered 4 more gb. Now I have 8GB, 8800GTS 512, P180, EW 500, DVD burner, and cpu cooler ready to go. All I need is the mobo, cpu, and HDD's and I'm ready! Can't wait for the new build.

Hi Spike, Question please. Why 8 Gigs of memory isn't that overkill ?

Would 8GB of memory be a Benefit for a Gaming-Only PC, or is 4GB sufficient for Gaming-Only ? (pretty much MMO Gaming is all I use my PC's for, and Websurfing)

4gig is sufficient and only fully utilized if you have a 64bit OS (winxp and vista 32bits will only use 3.25-3.5gb)

Yes, it is overkill right now, but then again so was my dual core opteron when I first bought it over 2 years ago. However, since I do ~2 years between builds whats overkill now tends to be useful later on during the life of my rig. I will be running Vista Ultimate 64 so all 8 gigs will be available but for me the only benefit right away will be the pre-caching that vista does, with 8 gigs it will be able to pre-load alot of programs and will appear "snappier" than without.

Besides the future usage I also did it simply because of price. I paid $220 for 2x1GB sticks of OCZ plat when I built my last rig so $170 for 8gb seems like a steal. Besides, if after a while I find that I still simply cannot utilize 8GB I can always build a HTPC (which I plan to anyway) and use 4gb of the ram in there.

And to specifically answer your question I think that while there might be a minuscule difference most likley you would see no improvement in gaming going from 4GB to 8GB right now. Though as we all know requirements changes rapidly so in a year... who knows.

Exactly, at this price, it certainly isn't dumb to buy too much. $150 for 8GB of ram is a steal. Like Spike said, we were forking over $200 for 2GB kits not long ago.

I constantly find myself digging around for RAM for something or the other. I sure could have used a 512MB stick of PC3200 a few weeks ago when I was checking out my friend's two year old computer that was running WinXP on 256MB of RAM (She was able to locate a stick for $39).

The 8GB of the Super Talent stuff I purchased for my new build could end-up anywhere sometime down the road. One thing I feel certain about is that it will never go to waste unless it fails.

I still need to buy all the other Dual-Core Components for my very 1st Dual-Core System. At 69$ for 4GB i figured I might as well start buying all the parts now. Still hoping for a 8800GT price Drop.

So 4GB will have to do for now cause I need the cash for all the other stuff atm.

4GB will be more than enough if you are cash strapped. Some of us are just so stary-eyed at the price that we can't help but buy 8gb's. As I said before, you would notice almost 0 gain going from 4gb to 8gb currently in gaming. Whether or not that changes in a year is unkown but you could always get more ram then.

I've on one occasion purchased an "open box" graphic card (last time I'll do that) from Newegg. Booted up with a multitude of colours didn't even know existed.

Promptly called Newegg and requested a RMA - No 15% restocking fee charged. Full refund was given including shipping charge, if I recall correctly. Also had a similar experience when I had to return a Logitech mouse. Was utterly painless, and quick.

OPEN BOX is different. They do NOT charge restock fees on open box defective refunds, because they do not replace open box items due to unpredictable/unavailable stock. And refund on shipping is YMMV.

Yes they do, I was charged a restocking fee for returning a defective open-box mobo.

thats probably because you returned it for "RMA refund". If you had chosen "RMA repair" they would have ended up refunding you (since they rarely have an open box replacement) on their own dime.
That's the loophole with newegg. If you RMA for REPAIR and they don't HAVE a replacement, you get a full refund ... and if you ask nicely your shipping fee too - ;)
