Also is the model number different than what's listed and does it say 7200 on the front?

Thanks for the info, would really like one of these hope they come back in stock soon

Could someone answer my question?

The reason I'm asking is because QPS does not list a 7200 rpm USB 2.0 drive and just want to know what the model number is on the unit you guys are recieving and how you know it's 7200rpm

Thanks

Several zip codes show in-stock, however I believe this is a web only rebate.

They would probably match the price if you can find one though.

I've never been able to get a B&M compusa to match their own online prices. CompUSA regularly has lower prices on the Web site. Their price match policy is for local merchants only, not online stores.

Ditto, my dad was getting this Linksys NIC which was on sale that week for like $20 with 5MIR, and while I was there I figured I would check one of the kiosk computers and check their online shop and they had it for $15 (with mention of $5 MIR also). The manager gave me some bs that the rebates were diffrent, and therefore could not PM.

Tried on several occasions to PM CompUSA and they are hard about it even if it is advertised. This one manager refused to PM a newspaper BB ad.

Just my opinion but their salespeople are arrogent (when my sister was buying a mac (I know, I know she's a graphic designer) the guy kept saying "where the largest computer store in the country blah blah". Their managers won't do anything as far as PMing without serious hassle. They sell returns/damaged/display items for retail prices and even sometimes higher than retail price. Their rebates are often a huge hassle. Their techs are morons (I reffered a friend to goto a repair shop b/c I couldn't fix it due to lack of equipment and they had his machine for 2 weeks and kept asking questions (to which he reffered to me and they didn't know what I was talking about) and in the end couldn't fix it and sitll charged him $50). Sorry but I refuse to purchase anything there anymore. BTW these experiences are not from one store, but through 4 in the DFW area (BTW one is less than a mile away from CompUSA Corp HQ)

I agree with ai42's comments above. Being in the same area, I've had issues at the same stores. I won't even go in their B&M stores.

Got mine. It says 7200rpm on the front with a sticker and on the specs on the side.

Part# QPM3HDU280G

UPC# 645439017306

Capacity 80GB
Spindle Speed 7200rpm
Buffer 2MB
Max. Tranfer rate up to 19MB/s
Average seak 8.5ms
Average Write Teim 10.7ms
Average Latency 4.17ms

Has anybody tried turning on write caching for the drive? I'm reformatting mine for NTFS, so I haven't gotten it turned on yet. By default in XP it's turned off.

Oh, and it looks like an IBM disk (120gxp?) by the model number that shows up in the disk tree in XP.

from the qps site: http://www.qps-inc.com/whatshot.html. This part # refer to a usb hard drive with 5400rpm. Did compusa put this sticker themselves??

I don't know if compussr put it in there, but the spec sheet on the side and the sticker on the front both look like they did not originally come on the package. They look to be inserts.

The specs are clearly from Que, and they've obviously just updated the drive. Their web site has been out of date for months.

But really: Who cares? People seem so intent on finding out if this is a 7200rpm or a 5400 rpm drive. Does it make that much difference? You're not going to see a significant performance difference in this setup. And regardless, $99 is a HOT deal.

These are nice drives. Got mine last night. 7200 rpm, as stated by the stickers and specs
right on the box. Comes with a nice case that holds the drive, the power supply, the USB 2.0
cable, the installation book, and the software CD (Retrospect personal edition 5.5).

I wish it were firewire instead, but at this price, I'll get some USB 2 cards to go with them...

So, I took my drive apart as soon as I got it.

It is indeed an IBM Deskstar 120GXP, PN 07N8084, 82.3GB, 7200 RPM.

Lowest price Pricewatch shows for this drive is about $97 shipped.

I bought a few of these, as I was looking to create a RAID setup (in another machine, removing the drives from the USB cases and using those for something else).

While the 120GXP's don't have the same problems the 75GXP does, two things concern me.

1) IBM recommends the drives be on for no more than 11 hours per day. This won't really work out with my RAID fileserver.. its on 24/7.

2) There's a small hole on the top of the drive which you should not cover, and has been attributed to a bunch of drive failures. IBM again recommends this to have adequate clearance. The QPS cover basically sits right on top of this hole..

Anyone have any thoughts/comments?

If anyone got one of these and wants to sell it or trade it for a USB 2.0 2.5" HD enclosure with a 12gb drive let me know.

Thanks.
