HOT! QUE 80GB USB HD in COMPUSA $99

The lowest price is $189 if you use Pricegrabber to search. Currently it's $99 WITHOUT rebate in COMPUSA.
You can buy a bunch of it and sell them immediately. Enjoy!

First of all, $99 is one HOT price for this 80 gig drive. I would definitely jump on this if i did not have one already. I bought one several months ago for over $200 and i am still waiting for a rebate .

NOT A THREAD CRAP: Things to be aware of QPS:

1. They declared bankruptcy a few weeks ago. If this is an instant rebate, the price is really good for $99. If there is any MIR, you can kiss it goodbye. I am not holding my breath to get mine, which was supposed to be given to me last April.

2. Customer service is quite poor. When my HD started having problems a couple of months after purchase, I called them up numerous times... same thing. I was put on hold for AROUND 2 HOURS, beofore hanging up on me. grrr. this constntantly happened even BEFORE they declared bancrupty. Now that they filed for chapter 11, i do not know what kind of warranty and support they be able to provide.

Lowest price for similar products on PriceWatch is $136. Seems like a HOT deal for personal use, don't know about selling them on eBay though. One guy on eBay has his at $99.

QUE did file for Chapter 11 (bankruptcy), but i read somewhere that some of their operations will remain open. Again this is really HOT if you get a problem free drive, just backup your data (as with any HD).

Que is just a rebadger like so may others. And like so many other rebadgers, they've
learned the hard way that the world is very harsh for rebadgers...

That said, there's no reason to expect the hard drive in one of these to be unreliable.
It isn't a Que hard drive. It's gonna be a Maxtor or Western Digital or Seagate or IBM or
Hitachi or Fujitsu or whatever
hard drive, and it will be as reliable as any other hard drive from the manufacturer who
made it...

One thing that is not clear is whether the drive will carry any warranty. If you get lucky,
the drive will carry the original manufacturer's warranty (probably 3 years). If you are
not lucky--and most likely this will be the case--they the drive was sold OEM to Que and
only carries Que's warranty. Which, given they are in bankruptcy, may mean no warranty
at all...

The firewire versions of these drives were known to be problematic (do a google search). I owned 2 of them, and one of them repeatedly failed, so I had about a 50% success rate.

HOWEVER: At least in my case, the problem was clearly the firewire controller in the drive. Other who had problems made similar complaints. Hopefully that won't be a problem with a different interface.

Good deal. Worth picking one up.

um, that's a UltraSlim 80GB, 5400RPM, ExternalHARD DRIVE.
pretty decent. if anyone can find better, they should post it...

Thanks for the info Kwad. FFor the most part, the reliability of the drives depend on the HD manufacturer as you said, like maxtor, wetern digital etc. However, the drive that i owned, s a firewire version, and the problem was the firewire interface on the drive (similar to Monty Burns' situation<several posts up>) or some voltage fluctuations that caused the drive to fail.

Again, i hope that issues with thier external drives have been resolved, and forr $99, that price is hard to beat.

Obviously warranty fulfillment is a concern, but that price is so tempting. Damn you Hot Deals forum! 😀

Anybody know if you can swap out the HD? Wondering if the enclosure and the HD are two separate parts, or if they're "fused" together with some proprietary design...

Hated to me another me too post but this is an Awesome deal. You rock Karnold.

Some advantages to this drive that people might not realize:

1. small (not iPod small, but not as bulky as most external drives
2. quiet (no fan)
3. not ugly (this matters for some)

As for the 5400 RPM issue, I think its fine, this isn't a system drive and you wouldn't be pushing
that much through on USB2.0 despite the lofty 480mb/s claims.

Bah, I took the plunge for the hell of it. I could use the 80GB for something... too bad no usb2.0 yet. Gotta get a card I guess.
