It is indeed an IBM Deskstar 120GXP, PN 07N8084, 82.3GB, 7200 RPM.

Lowest price Pricewatch shows for this drive is about $97 shipped.

I bought a few of these, as I was looking to create a RAID setup (in another machine, removing the drives from the USB cases and using those for something else).

While the 120GXP's don't have the same problems the 75GXP does, two things concern me.

1) IBM recommends the drives be on for no more than 11 hours per day. This won't really work out with my RAID fileserver.. its on 24/7.

2) There's a small hole on the top of the drive which you should not cover, and has been attributed to a bunch of drive failures. IBM again recommends this to have adequate clearance. The QPS cover basically sits right on top of this hole..

Anyone have any thoughts/comments?

the hole has been attributed to a bunch of drive failures????so for you guys who have already got the drive. Did any body encounter any proplem??

I thought the hole was only for if you experienced changes in pressures, say moving from one low elevation to a high one.

Went to CC B&M.
Walked over to a computer and went to compusa website.
Called over an associate.
Printed out the online only rebate offer and gave to associate.
Associate went to manager.
Manager price matches 7200rpm 80gig external qps drive at 99.99,
I walk out of store with hardrive minus 108.xx

told friend of deal and gave him printout. He gets same deal.

also, the drive was just USB 2.0 not firewire

Looks like the 'breather' hole is for changes in temperature and pressure (ie, spinning at 7200 RPM, the internals get warmer, causing expansion of the air. If the system was sealed, the pressure inside would increase as the temperature did, possibly breaking the seals, causing other damage, etc.. Thus, the breather hole helps create pressure equilibrium.) Some sites have mentioned the breather hole as a source of problems if it is sealed (ie, if you added a hard drive heatsink, which covered the hole).

I have 2 new, sealed in box that I'll sell for my cost (~$110 each after tax and shipping) plus shipping ($10) for anyone that missed out. Let me know soon before I return them.

BOTH ARE PENDING
