Actually, Intel started dropping prices today. I suggest you wait couple of days, though - some stores already offer them for $254, and the price will come down even more.

maybe its just me, but $260 for a cpu that will be worth 1/2 of that in a few mos doesnt seem like a good deal. intel overprices these cpus so much its insane. bump for a good deal to those who like to spend a lot of money on cpu's :)

I think all of us know when you purchase computer parts prices will fall. You buy it when the price is affordable and you live with it.

Jonathan Joseph, of Salomon Smith Barney Inc., in San Francisco, said the giant chipmaker will slash prices on its Pentium 4 processors up to 67 percent in conjunction with the release of its 2.8GHz chip Aug. 25 and in a second round of cuts Sept. 1.

I am an Intel dealer. price drop on Monday is on 2.53 only, but on August 30th, rest of proc will follow. example: 2.4GHz, $208. 2 Ghz, $175.

We usually find out about the price drop 2 months beforehand. next price drop is early November.

The Pentium II 266 took a price drop too. I've been waiting for one of these. $18 shipped.
Think I should jump on this now or wait a little longer.

I'd wait, once they start releasing CPU faster than the PII 266, you'll see the prices plummet! Can't wait to be holding a PII 300MHz CPU in my hand..... ;)

I agree that you can't wait for prices to stop falling but with the possible release of intel 2.8GHz on monday you might see a significant difference in price by waiting an insignificant amount of time.

Or, save yourself the trouble and buy AMD! :D

IMO, I wouldn't touch Intel with that same pole. Way overpriced and someone has to support the competition. That's what is keeping Intel in line. Imagine if they were the only game in town. You would be paying a lot more than above 260 after a price cut. When was the last time you saw Microshaft drop the prices on older or outdated products. You Intel fans really should be grateful that AMD is still alive and kicking.

Intel has its advantages but AMD gets you more for your money.

There are reasons to buy Intel over AMD but I don't think you can make a blanket statement saying one is better than the other.

Looks like this will be the chip i'll be getting when i upgrade my pc. The only problem i'm having is decideing whether to go w/ a rdram 1066mhz board (intel chipset) or go w/ a ddr based board. Rdram seems to be faster according to all the sites i've looked at. I've always had intel chipset boards except one time I got a via based board. It sucked. Will never buy another. This leaves the sis chipset. I heard theres a new one coming out but i'm not sure if buying a ddr based board w/ a sis chipset is the right thing to do. I want the fastest most stable system. I have a rdram based board now and don't really have a problem with it, other than it being an intel board (which i'll never buy another) and don't allow any overclocks. I will not buy a system which is only fast if overclocked as I don't normally overclock. I like to run stock and not worry about 1 single stability issue.

Just because AMD is Intel's competitor isn't a good reason to support it. I support a product because it's better. Athons were better and cheaper for a long time, and I supported them. Now P4s are better and while still more expensive, they are faster and more stable, IMO. I go with whats the best in the market at any given time.

I've got agree with you, except that the way you put it makes it sound like you get the speed and stability without having to pay a premium for it.
