Oh, I did notice this:

Save $49 on shipping with mail-in rebate. Price shown before rebate Qty: 1
Unit Price: $0.00

That is what I was talking about... where can I find this MIR? I can't seem to locate it.

Also, any update on the student discounts? I think they're stopping them all.

1)The 8 Cell is physically bigger and protrudes.
I realize they're bigger; however I'm still asking if the primary AND additional 8cells are physically identical, granted they are both 65Whr.

Pls. confirm, tx.

I may be all wrong but according from my saved shopping list I had written down, this deal is actually a little less hot the deal 2 weeks ago. This deal is not technically as hot, but just almost as hot as last deal's (since you lose out on $14 additional), so don't feel a need to jump in since this deal happened twice in about a month time-span. This would be a hotter deal if you also get the 10% off or some sort of coupon, but you only get the $750 off and free shipping. Here is an example below:

Last Deal
Dell Inspiron 8600
Intel Pentium M Processor 715 (1.5 GHz/500 MHz FSB) 15.4 WXGA
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
512MB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
128MB DDR ATI's Mobility Radeon 9600 PROTURBO
FREE 40GB Hard Drive
FREE 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo with Sonic RecordNow Upgrade!
Dell Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps)
AC adapter - 65w, 19.5v
72 WHr Spare Primary Battery
=====================
$1527 - ($500 off $1499 Inspiron) = $1027 - ($200 off if printer not selected) = $827
$827 + $49 shipping = $876
GRAND TOTAL = $876

Today's Deal
Intel Pentium M Processor 715(1.50A GHz/400MHz FSB) 15.4 WXGA
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Free Upgrade! 512MB DDR SDRAM 2 DIMMs
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY RADEON 9600 PROTURBO
40GB Hard Drive
24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive with Sonic RecordNow
Dell Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps)
AC adapter - 65w, 19.5v
72 WHr Spare Primary Battery
=====================
$1640 - ($750 off $1500+ Inspiron) = $890
$890 + (Free $49 Shipping) = $890
GRAND TOTAL = $890

If you want to calculate this yourself, from today's deal, change the following:
? 30 GB Hard Drive
? 8X Max DVD ROM
After these two changes, your total should be $1576 - ($750 off $1500+ Inspiron) = $826
The $1 difference is because last week's deal was $700 off + $49 = $749
Today's deal is ($750 off) + (Free $49 Shipping) = $750

I'm having a hard time deciding between WSXGA+ and WUXGA for the 15.4" 8600. I'd be doing programming on this and a lot of web surfing... I had SXGA+ on my old 15" IBM and liked it, but I wonder if WUXGA is too small. It also seems like most of you are going WSXGA+!

I also noticed a calculating error on Dell's website... If you have the Unit Price $1576 setup (before any discounts) and click on adjust:
? 40 GB Hard Drive [add $23 or $1/month1]
? 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo with Sonic RecordNow Upgrade! [add $35 or $1/month1]

The expected price for just these is $1576 + $23 + $35 = $1634
But when you go to checkout, the Unit Price is $1640. That's an additional $6 from no where.
Now somewhere in my mind, Dell's discounts are swaying my manual calculations off by $6, but logically speaking, they may be trying to milk in an extra $6. Just my $.02.

I went with WSXGA+ after some consideration. Partially to lower the price and partially because I figure that I'll have a lower res for games/readable font size.

I wish I could have seen them side by side first, though.

Yes, I believe most people are going for the wsxga.... the wuxga seems like it would be just too small for me.

I ordered an 8600 last week, received yesterday. I got the free 40GB hard drive upgrade, but Windows shows it to be 33.6 GB. I know all about the different definitions of Megabytes, etc., and I know that some vendors put stuff on a hidden partition, but is it right to be missing 6 GB???

I tried to look at the disk under Disk Management, and nothing showed up. Is this a limitation of XP Home? (only used Pro before )

Same thing here. I just bumped the hdd to 40Gb. It's a nice number.

Couldn't resist, bought 2. This one for me:

Inspiron 8600 Intel® Pentium® M Processor 715(1.50A GHz/400MHz FSB) 15.4 WSXGA+
512MB DDR SDRAM 2 DIMMs
128MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY® RADEON 9600
Hard Drive 60GB Hard Drive
Power Adapter AC adapter 19.5v 90W
Windows® XP Home Edition
Network Card Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
CD ROM/DVD ROM 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
Primary Battery 72 WHr Primary Battery ADDBATT [312-0066]
4 year premium support + 4 year complete care accidental insurance
Dell TrueMobile 300 Bluetooth Internal Card
Graphite Swirl QuickSnap Cover

1523.55 - $100 support rebate - $49 shipping rebate = $1374.55

And this one for my parents:

Inspiron 8600 Intel® Pentium® M Processor 715(1.50A GHz/400MHz FSB) 15.4 WSXGA+
512MB DDR SDRAM 2 DIMMs
32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 AGP 4X Graphics
Hard Drive 40GB Hard Drive
Power Adapter AC adapter 19.5v 90W
Windows® XP Home Edition
Network Card Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
CD ROM/DVD ROM 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
Primary Battery 72 WHr Primary Battery ADDBATT [312-0066]
4 year premium support + 4 year complete care accidental insurance
Dell TrueMobile 300 Bluetooth Internal Card
Red Lava QuickSnap Cover

1418.61 - $100 support rebate - $49 shipping rebate = $1269.61[/b]

The 4 year support & replacement policy is the killer at around $370 before rebate. But I've had an Inspiron 8200 for about 2 years now (bought it with standard 1 year warranty) and now the battery life sucks (less than 30 minutes) and I had to buy a new AC adapter (around $60) cause mine burnt out. I think it may have fried something inside too since it thinks the CPU temp is always 85C and runs fans at full speed (hopefully a reformat will solve this, maybe a BIOS upgrade). Anyway, for long term this insurance is good for me.

I guess 4 year support is good if you plan on keeping your laptop for that long.

BTW, why upgrade to the 60GB from Dell? You could buy a Hitachi 7200RPM 60GB drive elsewhere, sell the base 30GB and upgrade for less.

I believe upgrading a hard drive involves opening the case (it's not a user-serviceable bay) and therefore voiding the 4 year support. Yes I do intend on keeping the laptop for that long.

With the rebate the 4 year support is actually cheaper than the 3 year support with the same features.
