Does going to 100 make any difference? I was under the impression that upgrading the interface speed isn't going to make your drive any faster. Given that many drives today barely burst past ata33, let along approaching anywhere the bandwidth of ata66, going to ata100 just seems a bit pointless. Or I am missing something here?

Guys, these hard drives *are* ATA100. Staples and Best Buy just haven't updated their descriptions to indicate that information.

I ordered two of these a few weeks ago from Staples when Best Buy had them on sale for $129 at the time.

Where can I find a Staple's $25 Coupon, all I have is a $20 coupon? Great deal! I've been waiting for it to set up a raid with my other Maxtor 40.

Thanks

The $25 off $100 coupon can be found at techbargains.

Shipping on orders over $50 is free at Staples.

Are you looking for a printable or just the code? If the latter, there's one listed at techbargain in the coupon section.

I would rather the printable... too impatient, can't wait for shipping, hehe. I'd rather go pick it up. Searching for a printable coupon now.

Thanks

Is this a Diamondmax or Diamondmax plus? Is there a difference and if there is, what is it? Also, are you positive that this is ATA100?

Thanks again,

Sal

I hate to bother everyone again, but I had planned on getting a IBM 60GXP from Newegg because of its speed and quietness. Does anyone know how this drive compares to the IBM? Is the Maxtor pretty quiet?

Thanks again,

Sal

Staples is next-day shipping, so you don't have to wait very long if you order it over the phone.

These are the DiamondMax Plus series of drives. I can't guarantee you that they are ATA100, but everyone who bought one of these during the last bargain a few weeks ago got ATA100.

I do not remember what the difference is between DM+ and DM. You can find out yourself by going to Maxtor's web site.

I've got a pair of these running in my rig, and I think they're pretty quiet. Maxtor hd's have an acoustic management feature that you can use to make your hd run quieter by sacrificing a bit of performance if you're really sensitive to noise.

The 60gxp is not that quiet. The following is taken straight from the 60GXP review at storagereview.com

The Deskstar series of drives can no longer claim to be among the quietest drives around. Offerings from Maxtor and Western Digital are distinctly quieter when seeking...

What I'm wondering is this: How does one pricematch at Staples.com?

You can call them at 1-800-3-STAPLE and tell them you want to pricematch with Best Buy. It's very simple.

Unless Maxtor have changed the designation recently, the Plus are 7200rpm while the non-Plus are 5400rpm.

I have the 7200 rpm 20 gig ata66 maxtor hd, and while it's given me no problems whatsoever, for weeks at a time it constantly gives a high-pitched sound that drove me crazy unless i drowned it out with music...for the price/performance it can't be beat, (got it last year for about $120, thanks to this forum), but I would rather go with an IBM drive...i've heard that they're quiet.
