hot deal maxtor 40 gig,,,100.00

Why can't I find any information about this drive on Maxtor's site? I'd like to verify that it's an AMA100 and would like to see how it stacks up against the drive that is offered at Newegg. Does anyone have any other information other than what's on BB or Staples website?

Sal

I just did a search on pricewatch and all the sites say that this is a AMA66 hdd and not a AMA100. They are also all hovering around $150, so this is a smoking deal anyway.

Sal

ST0154000U is the model# for the KIT, not the drive. The one older ones are ATA66 and the new ones are ATA100.

i just did a search of old topics. This drive is ata 100 plus you can getthe adapter card which has the 50.00 rebate. It's at maxtors website under promotions

Reminder: The Maxtor "Fast Money" rebate offer doesn't expire until June 30. If you like, you can make this deal a little hotter buy buying the Maxtor Ultra ATA/100 PCI Adapter Card. If you combine the two orders, you can use a $30 off coupon and save $5 more. Another alternative would be to buy the card in a brick and mortar store using the $10 off $40 coupon mentioned in this thread and save $5 over that. Summary:

[*]Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm (Staples stock #428386) - $149.98[*]Price match to Best Buy - $30.00[*]Maxtor PCI Adapter card (Staples stock#443233) $49.99[*]Staples discount coupon -$30 [*]Total order amount $139.99 [*]Maxtor Rebate -$50 [*] Net total - $89.99 (+tax on $139.99) - [$85.99 if card purchased in store with extra discount coupon]

NOTE: Be sure to review the Maxtor rebate FAQ before submitting this rebate request to be sure that you comply with the requirements. I'd also advise saving a printed copy of the FAQ in case the rebate center questions the separate purchases.

As previously stated, the information from Staples and Best Buy are badly outdated. Even the CSR's are quoting it as ATA66. (AFAIK, Maxtor has stopped making the ATA66 model months ago.)

Because BB/Staples information hasn't been updated, there is no way for you to obtain the amount of assurance that you seem to desire, other than the first-hand experiences of myself and others who have purchased this drive from Staples.

As h0vic stated, that ST# is for the kit, not the drive. The drive itself is model # 5T040H.

FWIW, if for some bizarre reason you actually get an ATA66 drive (which I'm 99.9% sure will not happen), you can always just return it to your local Staples B&M for a full refund.

I wonder why you guys are all worried about ATA100...just like Poochy said, hardrives rarely reach even ATA66's maximum performance.

Any idea how long that price will last on Best Buy's site? Is it a one-day thing? (IE only today?)

Its a WARM Deal. I don't know if you remember the Sam's Club deal. Well, I got me a Western Digital 60 Gig 5400 RPM Hard drive for 98 bux shipped and taxed. I bought 2 since it was cheap. I got 3 suckers of this same hard drive. And I tell you, these beat my IBM Deskstar 40 gig 7200 RPM. Plus the Western Digital is very quiet. I can't even hear my hard drive running when I'm transfering 40 gig to another hard drive. I'm very impressed.

From what everyone who's pruchased this drive reports in the last few months (with about three exceptions where old stock was shipped)reports, these are the NEW DiamondMAX PLUS drives with 20GB/platter and ATA100 interface. I doubt you'll find any of the DMA66 drives remaining in stock at Staples or BestBuy. All of these drives carry the same model number though the drive itself varied for a while. Expect to receive the 20GB per platter version though even the older 10 GB/platter drives could be upgraded to ATA100 through a firmware update.

The drives are very quiet and with the acoustic utility are essentially silent.

The Staples and BestBuy descriptions have continued to say ATA66 though all current production drives from Maxtor are ATA100.

This is a great deal for a great drive!

Just ordered the drive. It seemed like an okay deal until they added 8 bucks for shipping as part of the pricematch (First time dealing with Staples), and sale tax. However, Maxtor has a $50 rebate when you purchase their controller card ($49.95 at Staples) with the drive {expires the end of June). I chose this option with the $30 off $150 coupon code.

Update: Sorry Athena, I didn't see your post.

<<It seemed like an okay deal until they added 8 bucks for shipping as part of the pricematch (First time dealing with Staples), and sale tax.>>

You should not have had any shipping charge if you matched to an actual brick and mortar store. The drill there is to call your local store and verify stock before you order then give the staples CSR the phone number of the store to match.

sandcone...Athena is right...if you could drive to the B/M store, why should they add Shipping!! Call them and get this worked out while you can...

Cool! Just did the deal with the controller card. Many thanks for clearing up that this is an ATA100 drive and that the part number was basically the kit number. Also thanks to Athena for bringing the controller card into the mix. I was looking for one of these anyway, so I can use this drive with an older system for now. To basically get this card for free after MIR is just great! Plus, I got the extra $5 off on the coupon code for boosting the sale past the $150 mark before rebate.

Great deal! Thanks!

Also.. Make sure and price match to your local BB like mentioned above. It saved me about $8 on shipping.

Sal 😀

i was gonna get the ibm at newegg, but since i hear the maxtor is cheaper and quieter, doesn't seem to make sense to get the ibm anymore. thanks for deal.

Same here. I was going to go with the IBM at Newegg also until this deal. Plus, the jury is still out on the IBM reliability as of late. I wouldn't buy an IBM drive right now until all this bad press shakes down.

after ordering the rep told me the staples truck would be delivering the drive. The staples truck drives 40 miles to me..Once staples truck delivered a box of pens that was free with coupon...

Well, to repeat that phrase we all know to be true but try to ignore .... STAPLES IS SUCK!!

For the third deal in a row I have ordered the item, this time a 40 gig Maxtor, applied a coupon, phoned in a price match and ... tra la la!! ... staplesissuck.com contacts me with ... "The item you ordered is out of stock and won't be available until (fill in the amount of days required to make the "hot deal" into a cold turkey). You may call back and place your order then."

!@#$%^& *()_+!@!! (Those aren't swear words; they are unhappy sounds.)

Just did the PM; ordered with the controller card and the $30 off coupon. Total was $149.78. Will arrive Fri.

This is just what I needed for my server! Thanks!

Just did the PM on-line using their funky chat facility, got 2 to go in my new RAID setup that I'm planning. Didn't have to pay any shipping 'cos my local BB had it in stock. Just hope they do turn out to be ATA100, otherwise they're going straight back where they came from!!! It's a matter of principal after all.
