I can't decide between this and an Epson Perfection 14xx/16xx (which costs twice as much as this).

This is a great scanner for its price. However, i think i'll be selling it or returning it to amazon. I tested it out, i guess i guess the comparison isn't fair. I was looking for a digital camera quality. My Friend has a Canon S200 camera, and the kind of picture quality that it get is just unbelievable...the color and sharpness of the picture displayed on the monitor. After looking at that, i was just so jealous. haha. Anyway, i think i have a misconception of resolution and color and sharpness of the picture.

Anyway, good find.

Received my scanner today and tested it out with very dissapointing results. With the drivers included in the box the output was not nearly as nice as my Canon N670U. I thought I was buying a higher quality scanner but I guess not. The colors on the D1250U2 were muted and dark compared to the N670U

I reinstalled the newest N670U drivers and rescanned - the results were even better than my original N670U scan and way better than the D1250U2 - so it looks like drivers may make a difference. I will update the drivers for the D1250U2 and give it one more shot tomorrow. I don't see any drivers for the D1250U2 on the Canon web site - I will assume the D1250U2F will work?

They'll probably work, but if there were newer drivers for the D1250U2F that affected the scan quality, they would have a set for the D1250U2 also. I have a Canon FB620U that I plan on replacing with this one when it arrives. Out of the 8 or 10 scanners that I have, the FB602U is still the best, so I hope the D1250U2 doesn't let me down.

I've had the Scanner since Summer and have scanned a few negs and have been pleased although not photo quality, it's simple to do but must be done 1 frame at a time.

Have you guys changed the dpi when scanning? I downloaded the drivers for the U2F for my U2 and it defaults at 75dpi(you can change it) when scanning. I haven't tried changing the dpi yet. I have finals.

I've had mine for about a week now. It's on USB 0.1 until Staples gets around to sending that free (AR) USB card. The image quality is ever so slightly better than my last $45 scanner (Umax 6400 Firewire) but gawd damn is it slow! Wow. I mean really, really slow. I know it'll speed up on 2.0 but what's with the 30 second "lamp adjustment" before each and every preview or scan? The old scanner would do 10 previews in the time this thing takes to adjust the lamp. Unless USB2.0 somehow makes this thing adjust it's friggin lamp in a reasonable period of time I'm going to take it outside and bash it against the curb until my knuckles bleed.

Changing the DPI is not going to affect the color balance and accuracy much if any, just the clarity and detail level.

Did some more testing with the new drivers, same results. It just does not achieve the proper brightness level, a quality that seems to be inherant to cheap scanners like the Vantas 3000 hooked to my kids computer and the Memorex 6136U sitting in my crawl space. You can kind of see what I mean by looking at the scans of the phone dial pad on the review page here:

Scanner Review Photos

It's much more noticable when you are scanning good photographs where lots of skin tone is involved (no not that type of skin...I'm talking about people's faces).

I rank it behind well behind my Canon 670U and even my old HP 5P. Guess it will have to make a good gift for someone.......

Mine has a weird film of gunk on the glass, maybe your scanner also has it. I noticed it when I looked at the light when the lid was open. Maybe you should try cleaning it. The manual has some tips also.

And the light adjustment is very annoying. I noticed that it turns the light off and on. Do you think this will shorten the life of the blub?

How are the scan times on this thing? Take long using USB 2.0 interface?

edit: just read worms. Yeah I'm afraid of getting a canon because my friend's (the 1-inch thick model) is very slow.

30 seconds? Really?

Mine only takes like 3-4 seconds max to adjust the lamp. Make sure you have "Quick Preview" enabled! I downloaded and installed the newest versions of the driver and I'm using the ScanGear Toolbox. Is there any better software that you guys recommend that I should use instead of Canon ScanGear?

It works pretty well actually. One question though. How do I know if the scanner is working in USB2?

Looks like its even cheaper at 46.99 plus the 5 dollar coupon. If you want to make ut perform like the D1250u2f, you can by the transperancy peiece direct from Canon for 14.99 plus 7 or so in shipping and handling. I personally don't need all the extra software so this works out great for me, get a 130 buck scanner for 64 minus some minor software!
I just ordered mine so they should have some left.

OK Staples finally sent the free USB card and after the major hassle of completely re-installing the drivers (God, I hate USB) I finally have it running on USB2.0. Wouldn't it be neat if there were an interface that was Plug and Play? Imagine not having to do a complete re-install of every device each time you plug something into a different port.

Anyway, on 2.0 this scanner is a *lot faster*. I mean night and day! It's now almost as fast as a regular USB scanner! Now, there's still the mandatory waiting period while the Keebler Elves replace light bulbs inside the thing or some sh1t, but once it finally gets going it really cooks. If I didn't tell you, you'd swear it was a USB1.1 scanner -- it's that fast!

If you have Service pack 1 for windows xp, then installation of USB 2.0 cards should be a breeze. You don't even need the card's driver cd.

The scanner is now $46.99

Can we get a refund on the difference?

Yeah, the card went in without effort. But since USB is such a porrly designed interface, moving the scanner from one USB jack to another resulted in the usual total re-installation. Remember the good ol' days when we had plug and play interfaces like serial and parallel ports -- you could unplug the device and then plug it back into the same or different port without having to dig up disks and download drivers and all that crap and do a total re-installation.

hey amagine, where did you find the transperancy slider reader seperately at the canon site? Only reason that I haven't bought this yet is because I need a 35mm reader with my next scanner purchase.

When I called sales at Canon, they told me I could purchase the parts for film adapter. I called 1-800-385-2155 option 2 and told them I bought the 1250u2, not realizing it was different then the 1250u2f. When I called today, they denied that this could be done. I'm currently on hold for a manager to straighten this out. Looks like bets are off as the outlet for the adapter doesn't exist on the d1250u2 and so the whole unit would have to be replaced. I'm going to attempt to refuse shipment of my order as Canon appears to be unwilling to compromise on their mistake.

I am totally amazed at Canon. Their website is misleading (tech support page to the 1250u2 takes you to the u2f page). Their sales people lied about being able to buy a film adapter to convert the machine into a film scanner. They tell me that if I had purchased the wrong part, they might be able to do something. But they say...after an hour conversation that the best they can do is apologize and promise to fix the website as soon as possible.
First time I have spent that much time on the phone and gotten nothing out of it.
Hope other companies don't crack down this hard.
Anyone got a contact number for amazon so I can return this thing and get a real scanner?
