I've received word from more than one reliable source that the Durons that are currently shipping are in fact SMP-capable. There have been a few rumors as of late that only later-year Durons and T-Birds would be able to make use of the AMD-760MP chipset, but it looks like this isn't that case. Rob, the source of JC's earlier news on the AMD 760's impending availability, also wrote in with some more information and clarifications.

Finally got around to testing one of them. I used Conductive Epoxy (that won't come off!!) to cover the gaps in the L1 Bridge. Used the stock fan from the retail chip but replaced the thermal "putty" with silver compound instead. Had it running for a few hours doing benchmark tests and seems stable so far at 900mhz 1.8v running on Abit Kt7.

Nothing has changed about this deal except the $30 off $150 coupon code. You'll find a new coupon code at other sites that are allowed to list such things.

Price is now, and always was, $81.95. Get 2 of them for $163.90, then use the $30 off $150 coupon and it ends up being $133.90. Add $5.70 shipping, and total is $139.60 delivered, or $70 each. Same deal.. Different day..

Also, don't sweat the other stuff like a case or additional cooling. A stock Computer Geeks $22 ATX case with 250w power supply, and the stock included Heatsink and fan, are plenty enough to run this at 900mhz, (896mhz@112x8 here, which is faster than running it at 950mhz@100x9.5), as stable as a rock. This is even with nearly every slot filled on the $135 Abit KT7 motherboard, including the power hungry Voodoo 3 3000 AGP. Zero problems or issues. Too many people are confusing this with previous CPU's like the Athlon which needed minimum 300w, or Celerons, which choke when ran at high temps. These Durons are a new breed, made to run HOT, HOT, HOT, without errors, and even a 225w supply should be enough for most users. With a CPU that cost $70 shipped, doesn't make sense adding $30+ for another heatsink, fan, grease and shipping, especially since they have a 3 year warranty using the stock HSF they give you. As long as you don't blow a hole in the CPU, AMD is not going to be able to see if you overclocked any that may fail. Besides, even though 1000's have been sold, defective CPU's, or units that fail, have not been popping up at all, unless they were run with NO heatsink and fan on them.

If you are having problems with the stock setup, then it is most likely conflicts with IRQ's or a Bios setting out of wack, and not temperature related. Check out the Abit newsgroup or KT7 FAQ'a at http://go.to/kt7faq for info on getting it working right.

so you are actually using the compgeeks' $22 atx case? I was thinking of getting the onvia antec, but couldn't justify the $65 for the case (even though i hear it is of high quality and such). reassure me that the compugeeks' case fits everything in and i'll order it asap (hate to order something and find out it won't fit or there are heating problems, but saving 30 bucks or so to use elsewhere will be great, like ram and a cheap sound card)

Hello Everyone,

Received all my goodies and now have the Duron 600 running at 900 an it appears to be stable. One question though and please bear with me, can I use a single drive on the RAID controller? Haven't gotten it to work yet and haven't really seen the question addressed anywhere. I gave up and just connected the drive to IDE1. Was hoping someone could shed some light on this subject.

BTW, I have not even opened the other processor but may keep it if it hits 900mhz also, considering it may be smp compatible.

I have 1 HD and am using the RAID controller with no problem. I'm using the first port for the harddrive, the other one is open. I think I may have hit <ctrl>+H and changed a setting or two, but I believe it just worked right away with little effort. FYI I'm using an ATA-100 compatible IBM Deskstar (30 GB). Don't know if this helps you, but yes, you can use a single hard drive.

I figured that's how it should work, no config necessary unless you are using RAID. Will try again tomorrow. I went ahead and installed W2k on the standard IDE port. Will try and switch it after loading the driver.

I just got my mobo (KT7) and chip but I can't seem to put the chip into the mobo properly. Is it me or is there something wrong with the motherboard? You know the KT7 has that CPU temperature reader thing inside the Socket A... and that temperature thing sticks out too much that I can't even insert the chip in there. Is this normal?

Should I try to bend the temperature thing so I can insert the chip? Or am I doing something wrong... the chip should be easy to insert right? I've never had this problem before with my previous motherboard... I dunno what this temperature thing is doing sticking out so much!

Sorry I know I sound like a newbie... its 'cause I've never used an Abit mobo before. Thanks for any help u guys can give!

its perfectly fine to bend the temp probe under the socket. just bend it enough so the cpu BARELY hobbles on it in the middle, then i push down on the 4 corners until perfectly in and close the socket so i know that it makes good contact with the probe and the temp is accurate as it can get.
