Nope. VLC doesn't either. At the moment I use PowerDVD, thank goodness that came with my BD player otherwise I'd have bought a $150 paperweight.

If brand name isn't important, Amazon is selling LITE-ON (iHOS104) drives for the same price, and it's sold by Amazon so it ships free and tax free.

Unless you happen to already own blu ray playback software, wait until drives with software pop up. I got my Samsung reader months ago for $70 and it came with power dvd.

Oh, and I don't know for sure, but I did hear that if you have AnyDVD HD, you could then play blu rays in VLC. I can't test this as I don't have AnyDVD HD.

I am pissed at Lite-on. I bought an $100 blu ray player from them that they no longer provide firmware updates for. With the constantly changing Blu-ray standards that means I can no longer play any Blu ray movies released this year and a good number of movies released after last July. I know they've done this with other drives as well

Each time I think its time to buy a Blue Ray player, that notion goes away within a few hours. I'm back to waiting.

that's certainly good to know. I liked them because their DVD drives can revert to RPC-1 (at one point I buy a lot of region 2 disks)

Do these drives allow you to rip BD movies?

Absolutely...with ripping software (DVDFAB HD Decrypter), would be one example. I'll also add that PowerDVD 9+, which plays BR (ISO) files very well, isn't hard to find (at no cost).

I agree, $50 is a hot deal.

Unfortunately I only have 1 5.25 bay slot available and it's currently housing my DVD burner.. if this badboy could burn DVDs I'd be in, oh well. :(

Hum. Can you give a few examples? I have the same drive and have not yet had any problems. I know that two movies from the end of 2008 worked fine (dark knight and forgetting sarah marshal). I do see tons of complaints about iron man 2 not working in many drives possibly due to defective master disk. I also see that liongate disks generally have problems in many blue ray players.

Hum. I should probably try to find a copy of Avatar to see if it will play; sounds like most older players have problems with this disk.

Totally agree, be-careful with liteon. I have found had bad experiences as well. I have a dvd burner from them and it is MUCH pickier than the LG it replaced. Then I replaced it with an asus drive and it reads many more disks. The liteon is noticeably worse and no firmware updates.

Constantly changing? I thought Profile 1.1 went final last year. The only new "standard" is profile 2.0, but any 1.1 player will play BR movies with 2.0 profile as 2.0 only adds bd-live which isn't a requirement to play movies. Another profile coming out is 3.0, though 3.0 will just be an audio standard for audio only BR.

And in regards to firmware updates, to go with the profiles there are hardware requirements. If a BR player doesn't fit the hardware requirements for 1.1 or 2.0 there won't be firmware upgrades to make them compliant with those standards.

Which is probably why a PS3 is still considered the best BR player you can buy.
