<< I've realized that my problems are w/ encryption too. when i disable encryption on the router, i can connect fine. any hints? >>

Are you using Auto supplied or Static WEP? I have one of these, and because of security I use static wep. My PCMCIA card is an Orinoco. What OS are you using?
>>

I'm using WinXP Pro. I've tried 64 and 128 bit encryption, using the auto "passphrase" input. Does this make sense?

OK, here is the text from the security page:

Encryption transmits your data securely over the wireless network. Matching encryption keys must be setup on your Belkin Wireless Router and wireless clients (computers). The Belkin Wireless Router uses WEP Encryption. WEP stands for Wired Equivalent Privacy. WEP can be set to 64-bit or 128-bit encryption. Select the level of encryption you would like to use below. Refer to the manual to learn more about using WEP Encryption.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEP Mode Disabled
64-bit manually
64-bit automatically
128-bit manually
128-bit automatically

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Choose the 128-bit Manual setting and populate all the text boxes that follow. Make sure to write down the key that you choose. You will need to enter it on the laptop.

Thats all I did, LMK if you still need help.

I tried both the passphrase and manually entering all the hexidecimal digits (26, I think). Everytime I turn on encryption, I can't connect to the internet on my laptop. The signal strength shows as excellent, though.

Any clues?

Yeah, you must enter the same wep key on the laptop as you entered on the router. Go to the properties of the WNIC and choose the second tab. Edit the network and input the wep key in teh wep field.

Anyone have a better ad scan of the CompUSA ad? I'm going to give this a try. I hope not too late.

Yeah, I made sure and double checked that the keys are identical on the laptop as the router. I feel so naked w/o any security encryption :(

Dangit, I just found out that 200ft of CAT5 is going to cost me $40, so I'm looking into this wireless router......I've seen the deal sitting here, but didn't want to splurge.

Now I guess I'll need some cards.

Quick search on pricewatch shows that newegg's NetGear card is one of the cheapest, so it looks like $47 shipped for a PCI wireless card....

so $110 after taxes for a wireless setup.......thanks! :)

Evilyoda: Keep in mind the netgear PCI adapter you see at newegg does not come with the 802.11b wireless card. It is only a PCI adapter card with a slot for the 802.11b PCMCIA card. which you'll need to purchase seperately!

the netgear 802.11b pcmcia card is another $66 + $10s/h at newegg so the total to get a desktop solution would be $76 + $47 = $123 add that to the roughly $70 for the router, and it's almost $200.

No go in Emeryville store, in Bay Area, CA.

EDIT: should mention why lol. The assistant manager had a filthy attitude and basically told me to get out. I asked to speak with the manager, and she said I AM the manager, and I asked her so why does your tag say Assistant Manager then and that's when she told me to get out lol.

For those of you who still want to try the Emeryville store, I think the manager is the tall blonde woman who wears the sport coat....

that sucks....OfficeMax is dumb for instituting a pricematch policy if they can't back it up...

Who cares, it is their own company policy. They shouldn't have a policy in place if they are going to whine about it.

I would get her name and report her to Office Max Corporate. This is rediculous. Look on the front page of the new flyer and it is written in large print about there price match policy. If they aren't willing to play the game, they shouldn't be advertising it. Like I said, I would complain to Corporate and maybe you will get something out of it like a coupon or something. At the least, it will make you feel better.

their only leverage for argument would be that the CompUSA price is after an instant "rebate". It says they don't match rebated prices, even though we all know that really only applies to MIR's.

Well I'm gonna go try and pick it up in a few hours, I'll let you guys know how it went in the Oakland County area of MI. But the price of a card really doesn't sound too pleasing to me. Argh.

I just went to the Emeryville store also and they wouldn't let me do it because CompUSA wasn't open and because my printout said that the price was after rebate (didn't specify mail in or instant). I'll probably try again later today. Anyone know if you can do it by calling in?
