I was at a "Big Lots" store a couple of days ago, and they had a name-brand (I think either Panasonic or Energizer or Rayovac or something) kit, with 2 D, 2 C, 4 AA, and 2 AAA batteries, and a charger, for like $17. The package said 1600 mAH, and they were NiMH batteries, not NiCd. The store was closing, and my friend was reading the package, so I asked him abot the charger, he said something about "quick charge", not sure if it's timer-based or feedback-based, but it was definately a name-brand kit, so I would expect it to be ok. I didn't get to read the back of the package myself. I hope this isn't considered a thread-crap, because it's not, I just thought that someone interested in battery deals would also like to know about this one. I saw them near the check-out, near batteries and other "impulse-buy" items.

Maybe someone can correct me here, but as I understand it, batteries charge because there is a voltage differential between the batteries and the charger supply. As the batteries charge their voltage rises and the differential drops. The closer the battery gets to full charge, the slower the charge. So even if using a timed charger, when the batteries are at (or close to) full charge there should be little or no current thru them IF the charger voltage is the same as that of charged batteries.
Does that make sense? Am I right? :Q
