Hospitals Ease Cellphone Bans

If you're in because you've just had a kid, the last thing you want/can do is walk all the way outside to make/receive a phone call.

So it can't wait to call your relatives? They just have to know right then?

Obviously you don't have kids.

I have NEVER seen a hospital room that did not have a phone in it. Get a clue people, use the phone that is already in the room. If you do not have long distance from the room, use a calling card. Anyone who is too freaking lazy to walk outside is also going to be too lazy to walk to a designated cell phone area in a hospital anyway.

If the woman giving birth had a C-section, she CAN'T WALK so you're probably going to take/make such calls in your room. Not outside. Plus, there's that whole infant thing to look after who also CAN'T LEAVE THE MATERNITY WARD for a few days.

Yeah, and if she had a C-section, chances are she is hooked up to equpiment to keep monitoring her condition after the operation. Why not just hand the phone to her and let is ring a bunch while it is 18 inches away from all of the monitoring equipment.

What's the benefit of calling someone immediately? Why can't it wait just a couple minutes? Is someone going to die because your answer is delayed?

1) It's probably the largest life-event anyone ever experiences. You want to tell everyone immediately, and they want to know ASAP.

As for privacy, I'm the first person to glare at someone for having a loud, inane cell-phone conversation, but stuff that goes on in hospitals is far from inane in most cases. I'm not going to fscking walk outside to tell my parents the news when I'm standing in front of the neonatal unit watching the nurses clean up my daughter who is all of 10 minutes old, you moron. I work in a hospital and use one alot, but I also know evertime ti rings i can see the interference in the polygraph near me.
safe for most areas, but they are right to limit them in the OR/ICU and other areas with a lot of sensitive monitoring equipment

Why not just test the medical equipment, put proper warning lables on them and then make sure that people adhere to them?

Oh wait. There are already too many warning labels on things because morons try to use blow dryers in the shower and iron their clothes while wearing them.

The last time my son had to go to the ER, the doc actually told me to use my cell phone. Granted that was because a nurse screwed up and almost killed my son....

Last time I checked, having the baby is going to cost thousands of dollars anyway. If calling Uncle Joe is not worth a possibly $2 phone call to you, it would have been a wasted phone call anyway. And you can find calling cards at any gas station, grocery store, strip mall...

you still get charged per call. They charge for local calls too. This is a good point though, the hospitals are going to start losing revenue from the phone calls. Now I see whats going on.....

Anyway, the general argument seems to be do not use cell phones directly next to highly senstitive equipment and you are fine. The problem here is that hospitals are absolutely packed with such equipment, and most of it is mobile and gets carted around from room to room. It is much easier for a hospital to say "No cell phones" then it is to say, "No call phones within X feet of certain equpiment, and make sure you turn off your phone if you see any of that equpiment passing by you in a hallway."

Also, some people with cells are sometimes disrespectful as it is, and they would be roaming all over the place where they should not be, making the issue worse. People would not want to be told, "You can talk over there, but not 5 feet closer over here..."
