so you want people to put up with a bunch of PITA little craps for more than 8 hours a day, get paid less than 40k/year, and teach them till they understand?

good luck.

If those kids were in a military classroom and they mucked up, how do i explain it?

Put it this way, i was caught falling asleep in a MC and i had shit thrown at my head. The second time it happened the whole platoon suffered and i had my ass handed to me. Never fell asleep in a MC after that.

Cliffs: Discipline would solve many issues.

It's called vocational school. You failed out of regular school? Great, now go learn a vocation and contribute to society.

For comparison, Canada's spending is about the same ballpark, possibly less, and the results are much better.

If you think this is a fair comparison, read up on the differences between the USA and Canada. It's not at all fair to expect the USA to have a similar average educational ability to the nice parts of Europe. The education systems in the inner cities of the USA are not similar to those in Austria or Canada - it's more like the Balkans.

But how does it get that bad? US schools are extremely well funded. Does the money get randomly thrown around so two adjacent schools are radically different?

In my experience you start with 100% and slowly lose points as the semester goes on. 90/100 on a test? That's a certain amount of points off your final grade. 80/100 on a major assignment, same thing. The starting point for the teacher's grading is always 100 and then you get dinged for mistakes they find. So this notion of an F dominating the other grades by covering 0-60% is false.

HS isn't worth anything anyways. What college are they going to get into with a 59% avg? McDonalds?

Our govt is attempting to flood higher education to the point it turns into what highschool is today. The biggest complaints on campus is the quality of the student. Many many first year students are in remedial courses just to get caught up to where they should be after graduating highschool.

Chances are high there is a college out there that will accept such a student if they decide to apply for a govt loan.

At our school, the first two grading periods we don't get lower than a 60, period. The third we can get whatever, but we have to have a 60 the first two times. So say we don't pass the first two, but get 60s. If we work a little bit, then get an 80 the last time (and pass whatever easy exams we have), we pass.

This is what I have noticed in my first year at community college. The kids act less mature than I did in Junior High, back in 1993. They are totally unprepared for serious learning and I don't just mean basic knowledge of math, science and English. I'm talking about the ability to sit in a class and actively learn, to say nothing about study and homework habits outside the class. They treat it like high school part 2.
And the teachers aren't much better. They are also treating it like high school. They yell at the kids and piss & moan about how they aren't going anywhere in life with that attitude etc. etc. They get into pissing contests with the students and I'm like "GODDAMMIT! Throw his ass out! Or fail him! He doesn't need to be here. Its college, not high school. You aren't obligated to keep him in class no matter what."

Last time I talked to a teacher about removing an asshole student she said she didn't wanna be the bad guy and hoped he would just drop out or succeed on his own.
Of course, the fact there was a shooting recently at the nearby Woodbridge campus doesn't help anything. Here at the Manassas Campus people were all crazy paranoid, running around like decapitated chickens.

I really wish they would just fail the kids. Then they'd either work harder at school, voluntarily quit and go do something real with their lives, or be forced to quit cuz mommy wont pay or the scholarship is voided. Either way the kids would learn what life is all about. But continuing the high school bullshit at the college level is irritating for a 30 year old. Especially because I wasn't like that in high school. Based on what I've seen, the Minnesota public school system is FAR superior to Virginia's. It teaches more than just math and English, it teaches you how to be a productive member of society instead of just another spoiled asshole.

lol wTF?!

Kids need to learn the harsh realities of life. If your lazy and don't work hard your going to be f0cked in most cases. Do not expect to be earning anymore then $50k without a lot of luck. Not everyone is uber smart but if you make the most of what you have then you can go a decent way. Just look at me!

school funding is tied to property taxes, for one thing.

another, i would guess, is culture and environmental factors.

Don't kid yourself. Uneducated parents have never cared about education.

I disagree with this. I went to inner city private schools K-12. A lot of the kids there were dirt poor and the parents were struggling drop outs who worked two jobs to keep their kids out of the useless public schools. The kids with drop outs for parents were the ones who would take an ass whooping for a failing grade. Those parents did not want the same life for their children.

More or less that is how it works. Though instead of random it goes to the school in the better area.
