Horrible Insomnia

Mill

Lifer
I've had insomnia for years (just look at how many posts I make at 4AM), but lately it has gotten really really bad. Over the course of the last three days I've gotten less than 10 hours of sleep. 2 hours on Wednesday, 2 Hours on Thursday, and then 4 and a half today. Not only can I not fall asleep, but once asleep I wake up at the drop up of a hat, and then I cannot go back to sleep. I've tried Ambien before, and it really didn't work very well for me. Same with some of the OTC and herbal stuff. No go. It is getting to the point to where I'm so tired that it is impacting my health. My eyes are bloodshot, my back hurts, and I have a headache from hell.

Anyone tried Lunesta or Sonata? I'm going to the doc next week.

Lunesta has worked for me since September of last year. For whatever reason, Ambien did zilch for me also.

Have you tried tea (no caffeine) and reading a book till you're tired?

More times than years in a day. Trust me, it isn't like there's something I'm doing wrong. I know all of the tricks, and I swear on a stack of biblles that they simply don't work. I read last night from 12am until about 7am. Then I had to go run errands... Zero sleep. Finally got 4 and a half hours this afternoon.

Drink until you're unconcsious??

But seriously, do you get enough exercise? Whenever I take a break from the gym for a few weeks, I usually have trouble getting to sleep at night.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I have real bad insomnia too, falling asleep is a bitch and once I'm asleep I always wake up after a sleep cycle or two.

I've tried countless heinus combinations of alcohol, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxers and opiates to no avail. The combinations that do work are too expensive and too addictive to repeat on any sort of regular basis.

Luckily, I feel fine when I awake real early, I just always feel that I need more sleep.

I'm definitely going to check this thread periodically to see any advice.

taking a 4 hour nap during the day is going to screw up your sleep at night.

ever tried something as simple as Tylenol PM?

you run on 2 1/2 hrs sleep every day? you must have a day where you just sleep it all away to catch up.
i actually don't do this anymore, but pretty much all last year, I'd had like 1-2 where I'd do 10-6 or like 11-9
and I can't sleep late either, even after a night out, dunno why

i couldnt sleep once for a few days....a joint put me out pretty well

after i ate all the chocolate goods, that is 😉

Nope. I've had insomnia for years, and I've never tried something as simple as Tylenol PM. I hate to be sarcastic, but lack of sleep and all that. No offense. However, the OP states I've tried most OTC and herbal stuff. Really it should say "all known to man."

so... this explains why you rammed your fist down my throat on that other board.
*whew* i thought it was me. 😛

try Tylenol PM. what do you have to lose? well... money, because you have to buy the tylenol PM. i'd be making a doctor's appt to get on some prescription med if it were affecting my life/attitude like you've stated.

I would try a STRONG sedative/hypnotic like chloral hydrate (also known as knockout drops). It's still prescribed, and there's NO f'ing way, short of you being immune to anesthaesia, that you'd not go under from it.

It's quite easy to make from household chemicals I've read as its the byproduct from chlorinating alcohol, but obviously that's not an option.

Benadryl always knocks me out.

But exercise is the key for me to sleep well. Stress from my job will cause me to sleep less and less, eventually waking up after only five hours night after night. Once I put in a good three mile run, I can get a good nights sleep for the next two days.

I don't think I have insomnia but I've always had trouble falling asleep right away at night. When I was little, it would sometimes take me 2 or 3 hours of lying in bed before I would fall asleep.

I've found that just having the TV on at very low volumes helps me a lot. I usually watch late night talk shows starting with Leno and drifting off towards the end of Conan. I have to have the TV at a very low volume though or any sudden noise (like the audience cheering) would wake me up again.

Listening to music doesn't help because I pay too much attention to it. Reading a book also doesn't help because I end up reading all night, unless the book is terribly boring, in which case I'm bored and still awake.

The man is saying that he's already tried it.

have a drink or 2 then smoke some weed, see if that helps 😛
actually, alcohol interupts your sleep.
Yup, it's great for falling asleep, but the sleep one get's is usually pretty crummy.

I often wake up every few hours and really wake up entirely too early.
