I knew quite a few kids from my high school that drove around at 15 without a parent in the car. The majority didn't, but there was a handful that did. It's not exactly a rare event.

Yep, kids are going to do stupid things. But generally kids do stupid things in stages, they start with small stuff and go step by step up the ladder as they push the limits. It takes a whole lot of misbehaving before you get to grand theft auto. If the kids thought they could steal a car and get away with it, then I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it was bad parenting. At that age I was as rebellious as any, but I had a pretty good idea of where the line was and damn well knew the consequences for crossing it. It's a crappy parent that truly believes their kids are angels who couldn't do things like that. The intelligent parent faces reality and knows that even though they want their kids to be perfect, that's not going to happen. It's their duty to make sure that the kids know exactly how deep they're going to be in s**t if they go too far. If these kids stole a car at age 15, it had to be based on the belief that they were going to get away with it or that the punishment would be endurable. Either way, that's bad parenting.

No doubt! I feel terrible for the whole families. I can't imagine waking up, not finding your kid/brother, calling his cellphone and it getting answered by a cop that's about to tell you the last thing you wanted to hear on earth.

:(

I would never do it because me entire life i was taught that this is unacceptable and wrong. If you kid doesnt follow or understand that, you've messed up at some point

So you never ONCE did anything your parents didn't want you to do? And if you did do something, then your parents just messed up, right? Nonsense. It's not even logical. Much of parenting is CORRECTING mistakes. Kids are going to do things you don't want them to no matter what. It's a given and has nothing to do with bad parenting. It's just unfortunate that this is one of those times when the mistake can't be corrected.

Now, bad parenting can't really be totally ruled out... we don't know anything about these kids or their parents, but it's wrong to blame the parents without the facts. It could simply be that the kids made an exceptionally bad decision.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. You'd think they could find something more fun to do than crash a car.

Bummer.

I see a law suite in some ones future.

I went to Jet School in Millington....

Who would get sued? The grandma who didn't have 24/7 eyes on the girls? The dad who didn't lock his car keys up?

Who else is there to sue? Poor parenting all around is the cause of this.

Take your pick.

People will sue over ANYTHING these days.

i dont think anyone should or will be sued here. regardless of parenting it is a fact that kids say they are going to sleepovers and sneak out and other kids steal parents car keys and joy ride. this is not the first time this has happened and will not be the last either. its sad for sure but it happens.
