Many states have adopted a graduated DL programs such that new and inexperienced drivers can not drive after certain hours, and they can't have more than 1 other passenger. I don't know if that would of prevented this accident but it might of prevented one or two of the girls from joining in the joyride.

Exactly and WTF do they have 7 kids in the car for? I don't understand how you think they could be sleeping when someone's elbow is probably in the driver's crotch.
I think he meant the parents thought the students were sleeping at home. Yeah, and how the hell did they fit 7 people in that car? I drive a huge car (Mercury Marauder), and 5 people in the car, (number of seats) is uncomfortable unless the people in the back seats are skinny or midgets. As much as I may get flamed for this, those kids deserved to die. They did something blatantly stupid, wreckless, and illegal. I think they may be frontrunners for this years Darwin Award.

I think them dying is a little harsh but it was pretty stupid. When I was younger, we used to stuff into cars to go to McDs but we'd never drive that fast. The driver was a retard for putting his friends in danger like that.

That's BS.

Agreed.

Should we say that any indiscretion that you were involved in when you were 15 was due to "bad parenting".

1. you're 15, no license and cant drive worth a @#$@

2. you steal your dads car at 2am

3. you pack 7 people in a toyota protege (how??)

4. you speed over the top of a hill and hug a tree

yeah its a darwin award alright

I feel bad for the passangers, but the driver was a fvcktard. If not now, it'd be something else later...

I hate to break it to all, but just because you parent a kid well does not mean he will turn out well. Everythign is a factor, from schooling to friends to TV.

Most parents would, but what of you were never caught?

I really don't see how that would have changed the circumstances here. The kid stole the keys to his dad's car, and thought he knew what he was doing. And the biggest point, HE DIDN"T HAVE A LICENSE. So even if you have to wait until you are 18 to get your license, it doesn't mean that you won't be able to steal the keys to a car and take off, it didn't stop this tard.

i would never even think about doing stuff like that. Its completly off limits to me... its not even option in my head. See I wouldnt do it just because of the consequnce, i wouldnt do it because its not right. Same way id never steal money from my parents (im cosigned on all our accounts). I think they call it TRUST

It's always the "good kids" that die.
Yep. "Good kids" who sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and steal their parent's car...

The way I see it, nothing could have presented this. This could happen to good kids with good parents. Everyone plays with fire a little bit when they're young. Sometimes you get burned. This is just a case of youthful inexperience coupled with a bad decision. Come on, how many of you stole your parents car, or snuck out at night?

I "borrowed" my parents car before I had a license and ended up wrecking it.

That's because of who YOU are, not how good your parents were at parenting.

I hate how everyone takes the chicken sh*t escape and blames the parents, the school, society, TV, Howard Stern, media, celebrities, lyrics, style of jeans, etc.

[sarcasm] Yea, it's never their fault. [/sarcasm]

uh uh, unless you believe that people as individuals come pre-programmed to be criminals or do stupid stuff, its your parents and environment thats shapes you into being you. I would never do it because me entire life i was taught that this is unacceptable and wrong. If you kid doesnt follow or understand that, you've messed up at some point

Kids are going to do stupid things regardless of how great or horrible their parents were. It's part of growing up. It's just sad that these kids didn't have a chance to learn from their mistake.

I knew quite a few kids from my high school that drove around at 15 without a parent in the car. The majority didn't, but there was a handful that did. It's not exactly a rare event.

The local news aired footage of the car and it is really f'ed up. Seeing that there were 7 in the car, they probably all slammed together in one pile against the tree. They are saying it was a sickening crash scene.

There's a case somewhat similar to this one in Charlotte that's been all over newspapers and talk radio.

The difference is that instead of 7 white teens going out joyriding, this case involves 7 black teens (none of whom had a driver's license or permit) who traded crack cocaine for time in a car, who happened to swerve and catch the eye of an officer who then attempted to pull them over. A high-speed pursuit ensued which ended with the teens flying off the road at 100mph into a tree and all of them dying.

Of course, the minority community is up in arms BLAMING THE POLICE OFFICER for pursuing the car at high speeds for a minor traffic violation. WTF??

Bottomline: kids will be kids, parents can only do so much and aren't really responsible for what happens while they're asleep and their kids are at home. I don't see any lawsuits in either case--the kids were stupid and paid the ultimate price for their lack of judgement.

To some extent people, as individuals, will have pre-programmed personalities. But yes, environmental factors probably influenced this the most. But the parents are still not to blame.

I'd blame 15 year-old hormones long before I'd think about pointing a finger at the 'rents. Sometimes, hormone-raging kids will get together and plan to do something stupid because they think it would be fun, even if they've been raised well and taught better.

I mean, I did stupid stuff too when I was that age, even though I knew what the consequences would be if I were caught....toilet papering houses for example. IMO, sometimes the potential for fun will outweigh the potential for risk/consequences in these kids' minds...especially if they get to impress some girls at the same time.

The parents trusted that the kids were asleep. Who wouldn't?!
