we should probably just have one garbage food confessions mega thread. then it might be awesome. doing it piecemeal like this just isn't as fun
Spam isn't garbage. Armour Star potted meat product? Well the last dog I gave a can of that to, growled at me.

I wouldnt go that far!

Spams "Meh" at best as long as you're hungry and you dont have anything else in the house.
This.
Edible. It tastes edible. Just.

This too. The greatest thing it has going for it is the convenience factor and the fact it is dirt cheap. Open up a can and its instant meat. Loaded with salt and fat so it can season other accompaniments like eggs, potatoes etc.... When cooked together with other items, it becomes decent at best (and thats a stretch). When it is the main item of a dish and its taste is not hidden, its awful (like a grilled spam sandwich). The meat, while edible, is questionable and loaded with fillers/chemicals etc... Everytime I try spam, with every bite Im reminded that this is subpar to even to fast food quality meat. Its even lower than a shitty quality hot dog.

Anybody with passable cooking skills can just substitute something of much better quality into a dish than spam. Instead of spam and eggs, try any type of sausage or bacon fried up. Instead of spam and potatoes, get some corned beef. etc...etc...etc... A little bit of imagination and you dont even need to use spam.

Unless you grew up eating spam and have such a hard on for it, there is just no point to it IMO. I try it every 5-7 years and Im reminded why I dont eat it more often.

I avoided Spam my whole life, thinking it was a novelty food only eating by sailors. Then my friend came back from Hawaii & introduced me to Spam poke bowls with eggs & rice. OM NOM NOM! Great in breakfast burritos or thin-sliced & fried with breakfast. It only has 6 ingredients too...way healthier than a lot of other packaged meat products out there:

1. Pork with ham meat added
2. Salt
3. Water
4. Modified potato starch (binder)
5. Sugar
6. Sodium nitrite (preservative)

Of course the sodium nitrite forms nitrosamines when heated, and is carcinogenic. No different than most cured swine, but it's something to be aware of. Won't stop me from eating it.

16g of fat and 790mg of sodium. Put your cardiologist on speed dial, you're about to become very acquainted with each other.

Well I don't eat it every day. And besides, cheap hot dogs are even worse.
Not really. I can't stand spam but cheap hot dogs are also nasty.

These are the cheapest hot dogs I've ever seen. You can get 5 lbs of these for usually 5.00 or less at Smart and Final.

Read the ingredients. The hot dog doesn't sound like it is real food, while Spam is indeed real food.

They are both real food in that you can eat them and gain nutrients.
They are both neither real food in the way that nothing that you would raise and cook yourself would ever resemble either of them.

Canned Pemmican does come to mind for Spam, as does canned corned beef.

Hey, you brought up that cheap hot dogs were worse than spam as far as fat and sodium.

I was just pointing out that the fat, sat fat, sodium content in cheap hot dogs was somewhat less than in spam.

Both are crap in my book. :p

I have ten 12 oz cans of Spam in my pantry. It's the one with 25% lower sodium. We don't eat it often but it's good in certain dishes and easy to prepare. Spam and kimchi fried rice is pretty good. You can also slice and dip it in egg batter and pan fry it. Then eat it with steamed rice and roasted seaweed. It's also good in ramen or Budae-jjigae. It's salty so you have to know how to use it but it's good if you know how to cook. Most people who don't like it probably ate it straight out of the can.
