I forgot to express shock over the Red Tail backing down after holding the high ground. :(

The red tail was just looking for an easy meal; the owls were defending eggs/chicks. The owls would go to the mat. Also, it wasn't a very big red tail, about the same size as dad (smaller than mom) and owls are better flyers. Mom was in a pickle though. If she left the nest to kick red tail butt that would leave an opening for the raven to raid the nest. We really need Silverprime to settle the matter.

This afternoon:
ghowls_2019_04_05a.jpg

One of the workers for the trucking company that owns the nest tree stopped by to look through the scope. She said that the company president made it clear to all employees and contracted landscapers that nothing was to happen to the nest tree as long as the owls keep coming back. The tree mostly died back last year so it looks like crap but the owls like it.

The chicks are growing fast! :) Everyone looks pretty happy. Dad is in his tree. He was obscured by branches this morning, may try again for pictures this afternoon.

There are three owl chicks in the nest again this year. :)

Dad wasn't in his tree today. He may have decided that the chicks are big enough that he doesn't need to hang so close to the nest. He'll still bring food for mom and the chicks.

I've been watching a tree in my neighborhood for a few evenings and mornings and confirmed that the couple from last year's "suburb" nest have a new nest hidden way up high in a pine tree. Dad hovered directly overhead this evening before flying off to hunt. He was spectacular. :) I didn't have the camera but I'll start carrying it. The nest is very well hidden so I don't expect any chick pics until they fledge.

The barn owl is in his tree down the street from the great horned owl nest. I don't think he has a mate this year. Last week a Copper's hawk shot into the barn owl's tree to catch a dove. The barn owl didn't even open an eye.

The family was all back together today with mom and the three chicks in the nest and dad in his tree. The chicks were out on the branches Friday afternoon which I thought was a bit premature and I guess mom thought so too.

Any trip of spotting owls in the wild? I considered myself to have good eye on things but I have spotted a few owls in my life and most of them are at night on top of a light pole.

Owls don't have very big hunting ranges so if you see one on a light pole, watch it for awhile and see if it flies to a particular tree. With great horned owls, the pairs and family groups call to each other, usually at dusk and dawn so you can follow the hooting.

Barn owls tend to only come out at full dark and also tend to sleep in the darkest parts of trees or in holes in the ground and so are much harder to spot. One year we had a barn owl nest in the neighborhood and the noises they make when calling to each other are amazing, otherworldly.

Spotting screech owls requires hanging out at dusk through full dark and listening for their calls. They have very small hunting territories so if you hear one, you can focus on that area during the day.

Most of the owls prefer clear flight paths so watch for them in fields and along open roads, trails, and creeks.

A couple closeups of mom and one of the chicks from this morning. You can see mom's been eating.

Another exciting morning at the owl nest. It started out idyllic enough with fat and happy little owls soaking up the sun with mom.

ghowls_2019_04_24a.jpg

Then along comes a Cooper's hawk to crash the party. Cooper's hawks mostly feed on other birds, particularly baby birds when they can get them. Mama owl was not pleased but the chicks are already too big for the hawk.
ghowls_2019_04_24b.jpg

The hawk spent a few minutes hopping from branch to branch screaming at mom then went on its way.
ghowls_2019_04_24c.jpg

Dad never showed up so he must be treeing up well away from the nest this morning. I think that if both owl parents had been around, the owl chicks would be dining on Cooper's hawk this morning.

I stopped by the red tail hawk nest yesterday afternoon. The chicks were active and mom was screaming overhead so all is right in their world. I stood off a bit because I didn't want to get my head ripped open I wanted to give mom her space . It was about 93F so there was a shimmer in the air which messed up the photos. I'll try to get closer this afternoon with a hardhat. I stopped by this morning in the cooler air but baby red tails like to sleep in so all I saw was a grey lump in the nest.

Yesterday evening at the suburb nest, dad was on his branch, mom has moved off the nest, and we could see a chick exercising its wings in the nest. The barn owl was sound asleep in its tree.

At the town nest, the older chicks are leaving the nest and moving out onto the branches with mom.

One of the owl chicks is missing from the nest this morning. Mom is in a nearby tree and hyper alert so I suspect the chick is with her but I didn't spot it. I didn't think the chicks were ready to fledge but the older one might have been. Last year, the first chick fledged on May 9th.

Two owl chicks still in the nest. The third chick is still missing and may be dead.

This morning at the red tail nest the chicks were pulling apart some unfortunate soul.

At the owl nest, the prodigal chick has returned so we're back up to three chicks. :)

ghowls_2019_05_03b.jpg

The fledged chick was in the tree next to the nest tree this morning. I suspect that its first flight ended somewhere not good and it took the chick a couple days to figure out how to get back to the fold.

Dad really doesn't like me. Mom wasn't in view this morning.

At the suburb nest, dad is on his branch and there are at least two chicks in the nest. :) Mom wasn't visible today.

ghowls_sub_2019_05_04a.jpg

The tan blob on the right is one chick. The white fluff on the left, barely sticking out above the nest, is the second chick. The clump in he middle might be a third chick or it might just be part of the nest.
